TYPES OF COOPERATIVES:

Consumer cooperatives
Consumer cooperatives are organized by consumers that want to achieve better prices or quality
in the goods or services they purchase. In contrast to traditional retail stores or service providers,
a consumer cooperative exists to deliver goods or services rather than to maximize profit from
selling those goods or services.

Credit cooperative
a financial organization owned and controlled by its members, who
can borrow at low interest rates from an amount of money they have saved as a group:
Credit co-operatives provide financial services to poor and low-income people in
many countries.

Producer cooperative
Members are engaged in production in separate enterprises, such as farms, artist studios, or
fishing boats. These cooperatives may provide supplies, marketing, processing, or insurance,
among other services.

Marketing cooperative
an organization formed of a group of producers of a particular type of product,
who work together to encourage people to buy their products

Service cooperative
Service co-operatives exist to provide a service to their members. This may seem to be a
simplistic statement but it is an important part of the definition of a service co-operative and
provides clues to its nature and its methods of working. It means for example that it does not
provide services to other than its members and therefore that users of its services must become
members.

Multi-purpose cooperative
2 or more of the business activities of these different types of cooperatives, e.g credit lending and
production, production and provision of goods and services, etc.

Advocacy cooperative
is a primary cooperative which promotes and advocates cooperativism among its members and
the public through socially-oriented projects, education and training, research and
communication, and other similar activities to reach out to its intended beneficiaries.

Agrarian cooperative
is one organized by marginal farmers majority of which are agrarian reform beneficiaries for the
purpose of developing an appropriate system of land tenure, land development, land
consolidation or land management in areas covered by agrarian reform.
Bank cooperative
A bank that holds deposits, makes loans and provides other financial services to cooperatives and
member-owned organizations. Also known as Banks for Cooperatives.

Dairy Cooperative
is one whose members are engaged in the production of fresh milk which maybe processed
and/or marketed as dairy products.
