I. Standard(s)
● Anchor Standard 4 (Intermediate LR.4.I.2): Audiate and perform intermediate
level scales, intervals, rhythmic and melodic patterns using gesture and/or
traditional music notation.
● Anchor Standard 8 (Intermediate P.8.I.1): Play and identify correct posture,
characteristic tone quality, accurate tuning and intonation, good breath support,
proper bowing, and/or correct hand position.
● Anchor Standard 9 (Advance Cr.9.A.2): Improvise musical ideas for a variety of
purposes and contexts.
II. Objectives
 Students will be able to understand different modes and relate them to chords
 Students will be able to improvise using the different modes
 Students will be able to identify and notate Ionian, Dorian, and Mixolydian
III. Assessment
 Informal assessment will be used by asking students questions about modes
relating to chords
1. C Ionian = C major 7
2. D Dorian = D minor 7
3. E Phrygian = E minor 7
4. F Lydian = F major 7 #11
5. G Mixolydian= G7
6. A Aeolian= A minor 7
7. B Locrian= B half dim
 Informal assessment will be used by observing/listening to students improvise
under different modes
 Formal assessment will be used by having students identify and notate Ionian,
Dorian, and Mixolydian

V. Procedure
 Instructor will start with nonverbal communication
o Why is nonverbal communication important?
o Is it universal?
o Other body language?
 Instructor will then proceed to have musical conversation with students
o Try to get them all
 Tell the students the importance of knowing major scales for
improvisation
 Tell students about modes and what they are
o What is a mode?
 Students will listen to a couple popular music that uses different modes
o Youtube videos
o After discussing and listening to a mode students solo using the
mode they just listened to
o Instructor will model first
 Tell students about different chords used in jazz
o Major- Ionian
o Minor-Dorian
o Dominant-mixolydian
o Students solo using different chord types and typical corresponding
scales and modes for them
 7 chords
 Students solos using some of them
o They play the mode first and then improvise
 Concert C-7, F7, or Bb7
 Or concert F-7, Bb7, or Eb7
VI. Closure
Student will receive their assessment piece on modes. Instructor will walk them through
how to complete the assessment. Once finished, instructor will collect papers.
