SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS IN THE WORKSHOP

ELECTRICAL SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS:

1. Not to touch naked wires/ worn-out or defective insulation of the electrical conductors.

2. For any electrical faults, the main switches at the main penal box or related MCB must be
kept switch off.

3. Earth connection to each and every workshop machine is compulsory; otherwise the
machine without earth connection is not to be operated until it is reconditioned.

4. All connections at the switches, MCB, motor terminals, control penal board etc should be
rigid enough to prevent short circuit or electrical flicker.

5. Motors in each machine should be connected from the MCB/Main Switch Box directly
by a continuous conductor without any type of intermediate joint.

6. For Three Phase motors, each connection supplying power to the motor should be perfect
with the adequate voltages in order to avoid motor failure & accident.

7. The entire starter (DOL etc.) having relay protection should be in order to protect the
motor and to prevent electrical accident.

8. The connecting wires must be concealed in flexible metal conduit tube.

9. For any preventive or periodic electrical maintenance work, competent & authorized
electricians should be engaged.

MECHANICAL SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS:

1. Persons working with machines in the workshop should wear covered shoes, tight dresses
and other safety apparels like hand gloves, helmets, apron, eye-shield or goggles etc.

2. Machines must not be operated without having proper training & skill. Inexperienced
person should take help of the concerned instructor/technician to work with the machines.

3. Any type of mechanical moving components like Belt & Pulley, Chain & Sprocket, Gear
& Pinion, Lathe Chuck, Spindle & lead Screw, Drill Chuck with Drill Bit, Mill Cutter
with the Tool Holder, Tool holder & the Ram, Bull Gear & Attachments, Grinding
Wheel, Moving Carriage etc. must not be touched. Any effort to stop such components in
any type of machine lead to a fatal accident.

4. Machine covers should be in position.

5. For any type maintenance effort, the machine must be switched off, the main electrical
supply must be switched off, preferably to pull out the ceramic cut-out or switching off
the MCB.

6. Machines, electrical switches must not be operated if there is water on the workshop floor
or machine bed or falling rain water due to the roof leakage or due to other reason.

7. A good housekeeping to avoid slippery floor is to be maintained.

8. Violation of the any above should be brought to knowledge of the concerned

instructor/technician immediately.

FIRE & SAFETY:

1. All the fire extinguishers should be in order as per manufacturer schedule for refilling and
maintenance. The defective one should tagged as “Defective”.

2. Gas cylinders must be maintained as per fire & safety schedule for explosive items. The
gas regulators, pressure meters, gas pipes and all the gas cylinder fittings must be kept in
order.

3. Defective gas cylinders along with the accessories must be tagged as “Defective”.

4. High & low pressure torch/nozzles should be in order. Minor defects in high & low
pressure torch/nozzles must not be neglected.

5. Gas works must not be done without wearing safety apparels like hand gloves, helmets,
apron, eye-shield or goggles etc.

6. Arc welding safety & precautions must be maintained for the safety of the eyes using
hand gloves, helmets, apron, eye-shield or goggles etc. Everyone must avoid to get
exposed in front of the electrical arc without safety apparels.

7. Everyone working with the machines should be accustomed to the use of fire
extinguishers for any emergency like electrical short circuit, short circuit at the motors
etc.

8. Safety apparels are to be used in hot working. The necessary holding tools tongs must be
used for handling red hot metals etc with proper training. Hammering of hot metals need
necessary training & skill.
SAFETY UNDER EMERGENCY SITUATION:

1. Under any emergency situations like fire, electrical short circuit, mechanical accident,
flash flood o heavy rain etc, the main supply input control switch at the outdoor of the
workshop should be switched off. The fire extinguishers available at the outdoor of the
workshop should be used.

2. For any type of minor casually, the First Aid Box available with the concerned
Instructor/Technician may be used.

3. For the person getting accidental electrical shock, accidental fire burn or any type of
mechanical shock, the concerned instructor/technician must apply the Preliminary
Physical effort for continuous inhalation, avoiding contamination to the burn injury or the
injury due to the mechanical shock until the Emergency Medical Services arrive at the
site.
