Course Title: THE LIFE AND WORKS OF JOSE RIZAL

Course Credits: 3 units


Contact Hours: 3 hours/week

COURSE DESCRIPTION

As mandated by Republic Act 1425, this course covers the life and works of the country’s national hero, José
Rizal. Among the topics covered are Rizal’s biography and his writings, particularly the novels Noli Me Tangere
and El Filibusterismo, some of his essays, and various correspondences.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

In terms of content

1. Discuss José Rizal’s life within the context of 19th century Philippines
2. Analyze Rizal’s various works, particularly the novels Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
3. Organize Rizal’s ideas into various themes

In terms of skills

1. Demonstrate the ability to appreciate literary works creatively


2. Demonstrate the ability to read primary sources critically
3. Communicate meaningfully and convincingly a particular interpretation of the past
4. Produce a creative work that conveys the significance of Rizal for the current generation

In terms of values

1. Recognize the value of differing narratives and interpretations of Rizal’s life and works
2. Appreciate the importance of reaching a personal opinion based on study and discussion
3. Evaluate one’s specific location in history and personal relationship to nation building
4. Work cooperatively with others

COURSE OUTLINE SUMMARY

To meet the expected learning outcomes, this course is organized into eleven interrelated parts:

3. Rizal’s Life, Family, Childhood and Early Education
4. Rizal’s Life: Higher Education and Life Abroad
5. Rizal’s Life: Exile, Trial and Death
6. Annotation of Antonio Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas
7. Noli Me Tangere
8. El Filibusterismo
9. The Philippines: A Century Hence (Other possible topics: Letter to the Women of Malolos/The Indolence of the
Filipinos)
10. Jose Rizal and Philippine Nationalism- Bayani and Kabayanihan
11. Jose Rizal and Philippine Nationalism – National Symbol

Classroom Policies

• Wear your prescribed uniform while inside the campus.


• School ID shall be properly worn at all times
• Only blue or black ink is allowed
• Use white intermediate paper only, unless specified
• When taking the test, always

Write your family name first


Indicate your course, year, and section, date, subject and regular time schedule

• Be prompt in attending your classes. Tardiness is discouraged.


• Maintain cleanliness. Do not write anything on the wall and on the chair. There is always a proper place for
your garbage.
• Do not loiter in the corridor during class hour.
• Bring your own school materials (paper, pen, book, etc.)
• Actively participate in class activities.
• Put your cellphone in silent mode during class hour.
• Observe proper seating arrangement.
• Ask permission before leaving the room.
• Be courteous! Be polite!
• Cheating means FAILING GRADE
