Background of the Study

Working student it is a kind of job to those student that need to have their own money

to pay their payments on the daily basis. Working as a student is really helpful to those student

that really need to have their own money to pay their tuition and to those student with a parents

that have not enough money for the basic things that people need to live properly, because as

a student they need to work hard in order to go to colleges and help their family in order to have

a proper life.

One of the dis-advantage of being a student while holding a job is that they are often

short on time and commonly find themselves with limited time to study, sleep, and maintain

healthy eating habits. In a study conducted by Gorgulho, et all., one of the main complaints

among working student is that they find themselves without enough time to eat right (Gogulho,

et all., 2012). Instead of consuming healthy foods, such as fruit and whole grains, working

students often grab a quick meal comprised of low-quality foods that contains sugar and high

sodium (Gorgulho, et al., 2012). This is not to say that students should feel discouraged and not

work while in college, but instead be mindful of the commitment and plan accordingly.

Working as a student is not really that simple because money will never become

so simple. As a student, things only become more difficult to deal with tuition, rent, bills, and

other income expenses. Student often hold part-time jobs to acquire income during their studies,

for a low-income student this is often essential because this is the only way to accumulate

income for their daily needs. Students from low income households will generally not receive or

be able to act on the same opportunities as students from higher income students they need to

work hard for them to be able to get what they want and what they desire to become this

situation can be define as a sacrifice is a common factor among working student who choose to
pursue unique opportunities, such as study-abroad, or student leadership position often offer an

honorarium but not nearly enough for student to rely on as a complete source of income.

Many researchers focus on working after higher education but little research the effects of

working while in higher education. Recently higher education has been increasing tuition and

other costs that go into attending college. This had been effects on students. Mainly, they are

looking for a jobs while in school to help cushion some of those costs and everyday expenses.

In Moris Triventi’s study, he looked into effect of working in higher education. He found that

working at low-intensity had positive effects. Some of the positive effects are increased

independence, ability to budget, managing schedule, and gaining skills such as communication

and problem-solving skills. Some of the negative effects are higher risks of dropping out,

delayed graduation rates, and negative effects on academic performance. He found that full-

time workers tend to have less time for academic studies and school activities. Non-workers

average 16.5 hours of workers studying per week and part-time and full-time workers study 15.7

hours a week. Full-time workers also attend class less time per week. Part-time workers in this

study were able to deal with the effects of working as a student while in school (Triventi, 2014).

Theoretical Framework

Academic Performance of the working students have attracted increased

attention among the university teachers and students with the aim of knowing and

understanding the reasons, problem and other factors affecting them. This may empower them

for lifelong learning to their journey to success hindered by their busy schedule and always no

time to their study and academic performance. Determining the concepts of this research the

study comes up with different theories. The theories that could be used as a example of how to

cope with stressful events. Stress is one of the most commonly used word nowadays. It is
defined as a force applied to distort the body, accompanied by physical, psychol0gical, or social

complaints. Worked- related stress can come from any kind of situation and it differs from

person to person we can not avoid this problem because we need to sacrifice in order to

achieve our goals in life. A Study in the Social Psychology of Adaptation. The study investigated

the reaction of 20 graduate students taking departmental written examination by examining

response to stress and techniques od adaptation. Since then, psychological stress among

students has received a lot attention. Most of the studies performed by different subgroups of

students (e.g. according to the field of study , first year students, race ethnicity, sexual

orientation and holding a job while going to the school). In addition to sources and experiences

of stress, other studies focus on SHS student strategies for coping with stress. (David

Mechanic’s 1962)
