RATIONALE

In fulfillment of one of the midterm requirement of the course Understanding the

Self proponents of the study conducted a research/ project that asked different people
of different backgrounds and/or age groups to express and elaborate their perspectives,
opinions and views on happiness, love and purpose. As the subject name suggests, it
aims to help us understand ourselves and potentially others more using the lessons we
have learned and the answers the interviewees have provided.
 ELEMENTARY STUDENT: Jhon
Profile and Background

Age: 6 years old

Gender: Male

Educational Background: Grade 1 student

: Paknaan Elementary School (Mandaue)

Background: John is the younger brother of one of the researchers.

1. What is love for you?

“Kanang tagaan kog pagkaon ni mama, mo bless ko ni lola, mo kiss ko ni

mama kung molakaw ug mo i love you ko ni papa.”

2. What is happiness for you?

“Ma happy ko kung tagaan kog pagkaon, paapilon kog duwa sa akong
classmate, palitan ko ug sapatos nga bag.o ni mama ug tgaan kog bag.o
nga duwaan.”

3. What is purpose for you?

“Ganahan ko ma mechanical engineer ug mahatagan ug balay sila mama

ug ganahan sad ko makatabang sa uban kung maguba ilang sakyanan.”
  OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH: "Leah"

Age: 18 years old

Gender: Female

Highest Educational Achievement: Senior High school

Last School Attended: South Western University

Background: Leah is an old neighbor and friend of Arniel and when he heard out
of school youth she was the first one that came into mind and luckily didn't decline his
offer for an interview. However she requested to not mention her full name nor any
sensitive data. Leah always liked good company and chatting about things that you
usually see namely people, schoolwork and motorcycles. She is out of school for a while
to support her family's financial needs and earn some money for herself and for college.

1. What is happiness for you?

Her happiness aside from finding an appropriate partner is to see her parents
and the people around her happy and contented. Also she also mentioned that
graduating college and achieving what the things she wanted in life such as a house, a
fancy motorcycle, traveling and lots of cash. In other words what she makes her happy
are the things that she desire and what the things of her love ones desire not to
mention she wants a life that makes her blood pumping and exciting and not the stoic
ones.

2. What is love for you?

Love is more emotional for her, she also described love based on the Bible from
1 Corinthians 13:4-5:" Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily
angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."
3. What is purpose for you?

She's not sure of her purpose but she knows what she wants as of the moment.

 HIGHSCHOOL STUDENT: Sheena

Profile and Background

Age: 17 years old

Gender: Female

Educational Background: Grade 11 student

: Cebu City Science High School

Background: Sheena is the younger sister of Christian. She is currently a grade

11 senior high school student. An athletic girl that is good in both academic and
sport. She was also a part of the dancesport team in Cebu City Sports Complex.

1. What is happiness for you?

Happiness is when you feel contented with what you have.

2. What is love for you?

Love is idea when i am giving my mother happiness.

3. What is purpose for you?

Something to achieve to be able to happy.

Age: 47 years old

Gender: Male

Occupation: Businessman
Background: Cezar is the father of one of the researchers.

“When I see my family happy and seeing my son and daughter fulfilling their
dreams and also serving God, Doing everyday task.”
2. What is love for you?
“Para nako, understanding is a form of love, nya buhaton nako ang mga
butang na ikalipay sa akong mahal sa kinabuhi.”

3. What is purpose for you?

“One of my purpose in this world is to serve God, nya mahimo kong usa ka
source na maabot sa akong mga anak sa ilang mga damgo”
 EMPLOYEE: “Tadz”

Profile and Background

Age: 37 years old

Gender: Female

Occupation: Teacher and Businesswoman

Background: Tadz is one of the researcher's relatives living near. The researcher
sees Tadz as an inspiration and one that motivates her which is why she chose
to interview Tadz.

1. What is love for you?

Love is the feeling of connection, affection, the want to belong, and the
capacity to accept and tolerate.

There are different types of love.

○ The unconditional love of God

○ love for the family

○ brother love - friends, siblings

○ romantic love

2. What is purpose for you?

Purpose is the cause or reason for such existence.

Like what's the purpose of love?

As a human being, we are created in the image and likeness of God. Since God
is LOVE; so, we are also capable of extending same LOVE.

To love and be loved is a reflection of God in us and among us.

 3. What is happiness for you?

○ happiness is to work out of joy and not out of need

○ it is having my needs meet without bothering other people

○ it is being self-sufficient and independent

○ happiness is being contented with what I have and having the freedom to
think, to plan, to execute and eat the fruit of my labor

○ happiness is seeing my prayers answered and having the assurance that my

prayers are heard

○ happiness is to see the seeds I planted grow

○ happiness is when I think of my goals and know that I am on track to

achieving them

 GRANDPARENT: “Moloy”

Profile and Background

Age: 67 years old

Gender: Male

Occupation: Businessman

Background: Moloy is a father of 6 and the grandfather of one of the

researchers. He has been married for so long with his wife Victoria and they are
currently residing and running a business in Naga, Cebu.

1. What is love for you?

“Love is the reason nganong nag dugay mi ni lola nimo bisag maldita kaayo
siya nako ug mao sad na ang reason nganong nanarbaho imong lola sauna
para makahatag ug pang skwela sa imong papa ug mga aunte.”
2. What is happiness for you?
“Kanang makit.an mo nako mga apo ug mga anak nga mag kuyog mobisita
namo.”
3. What is purpose or you?
“Among purpose sa imong lola kay paningkamotan nga e guide mo sa
kinabuhi. Maong paminaw mo namo kay mas daghan na mig naagian kaysa
ninyo, maminaw man sad mi ninyo.”
CONCLUSION:

Finding love, happiness, and purpose is said to be man's greatest aim. We live
and do everything we can in order to achieve these three things. However, how we
achieve these, when we achieve these and what the exact definition of these three
things are, vary from person to person, as depicted in the interview/research
conducted.

Love for one person may be finding his other half, someone he can spend the
rest of his life with. But for another, love can just simply be seeing his family happy, or
much better, love is when one serves the Lord.

Happiness for some may be based on material things they achieve while for
other happiness comes when one also spreads happiness.

One may see his purpose as achieving his goals for a better life while another's
may be geared more towards helping others lives become better.

All of these points of view on love, happiness and purpose are valid and highly
respected. One cannot judge a person simply because their views on these things differ
from the other.

We must always remember that our views on love, happiness, and purpose rely
greatly on how long we've seen the world, and the experiences we've had in that span
of time. We may see an elementary student's views as shallow because happiness for
them is getting new toys, but that is because their experiences are still limited to those
kinds of joy, while happiness for older folks are them achieving their dreams or simply
seeing their children happy too.

As time passes by, our view about life and everything it comes with changes. We
work, we play, we make mistakes, we learn, and when we learn, we grow. That, we
believe, is the best thing in life and one that every single person should aim for,
growing.
