Picture this: A seven-year-old boy forced to be part of the school band. To top that, the school picked one of the
most challenging instruments, the violin. There are two ways in which the next set of events could have
progressed. Unpredictably, I took the road less traveled and was mesmerized by the single piece of wood that was
art. That was the moment I decided to dive deep and play the violin. To start, I took Indian classical music lessons.

Unlike western classical music, there are letter notes but no sight-reading, and ear training was a priority. Classes
and practicing on my own for forty minutes a day trained my finger muscles to remember positions for the notes.
The sweet pain I felt instantly did not shake me. The initial scratchy sounds that were coming out of this marvelous
piece of wood were frustrating but challenged me beyond what a regular seven-year-old would aim to do. My
determination persisted as I realized one thing; I was a borderline perfectionist. The result was obvious. Beyond
the numb fingertips and sore neck muscles, I had become comfortable with the instrument to learn on my own and

perform for an audience whenever I had the opportunity. Fast-forward three years, the glorious muscle memory
pushed me from a beginner with position - indicative whitener markers to playing the violin by ear. And then, the
music stopped. This was phase one.

I lived in a colony setting where the lifestyle was beyond regional borders; we celebrated multi-ethnic events and
milestones regularly. All the men worked for a petroleum refinery. We all lived like one big happy family through
thick and thin. My dad, being in a senior position, was sought after by international companies when I was growing
up. Because of better prospects, my mother and I moved with him depending on the education opportunities. The
change of place meant new friends to make but it also meant staying away from my comfort zone. This triggered
new emotions and a mindset. We lived in Dubai for three years and I attended a school where there were only
PR
twenty students in a class compared to the fifty, I was used to. I loved the attention at most times but it did get to
me as I felt the pressure to enhance my English language, math skills, and learn Arabic from scratch to catch up
with peers. The music scene reduced to listening and singing as the focus shifted to academics. Music became
therapeutic during dark days when I just could not crack a math problem or missed hanging out with friends I grew
up with. I would come back from a long day, pop in my earphones and listen to my playlist on repeat.
Being a single child, my parents made sure they gave me everything I needed to progress but working hard was
up to me. Phase two began with a bang! Dad decided to spend more time to help me out with math. I started
reading books to develop my vocabulary and language skills. From a person who would rather play video games
or listen to music, I became this obsessive reader. I would wait to get away from doing something to finish a book I
had started. Reading trumped all other interests except for the occasional music spark depending on the artist.
Three became my magic number. In three years, I became a voracious reader and scored the second-highest
marks in math in tenth grade. This boosted my confidence to levels that rekindled my interest in music; but this
time, it was a new instrument, the guitar. Thank goodness for a fretboard!

Why Purdue?
An interdisciplinary approach to engineering is what I seek. Purdue's 'First-year Program in Engineering' would
serve as the ideal platform to learn the fundamentals and explore majors to understand my fit. Extending my
religion of 'giving' through the 'Engineering Projects In Community Service' (EPICS) and continuing to give in-deed
will be soul-satisfying. I look towards 'The Guitar Club' to help improve my strumming abilities as a YouTube
learner. As an Indian classical violinist myself, it would be an honor to tutor interested students and contribute to
the cultural art form.
Why Major?
I'm that person in the family who is called if phones crashed or printers got jammed. Eventually, taking machines
apart to understand its working and being equally intrigued by hardware and software, I became a tech geek.
Linking this with my passion for aviation was simple. I've always used diverse approaches in flight simulators
involving coding, hardware tampering for the joystick and throttle springs to mimic the feel of a particular aircraft.
Electrical combined with Computer engineering would be the ideal major to complement my JAVA, VisualBasic,
Python, and C++ knowledge, merge interests, understand, test and design innovative systems.
