EARTHQUACK PROOF STRUCTURE
Due to the level of uncertainties, Building Earthquake resistance structures are the ultimate challenge for
structural engineers. An Earthquake resistant structure should be capable to withstand sudden ground shaking to
minimize structural damages, human death and injuries. In general, Reinforced Concrete has enough Earthquake
proof of buildings but the cause of failures during an earthquakes are usually due to the poor mix design of
concrete and it is not properly to achieve its designed compressive strength.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:- To build Earthquake Proof Structure with no Lateral Displacements and
structural Damage at the maximum intensity of earthquake vibration.

New Innovation :-Japanese Komatsu company created threads made from thermoplasticcarbon fibre
composite. These threads are tied and braided to form a strong flexible rod which is 90% lighter than
reinforcement bars and has the same strength.

To make Earthquake proof buildings these Composite rods are tied & secured roof to the ground and installed
around the building. Rods are also installed inside the building to strengthen the interior walls.
For suppose during an earthquake if building is pushed towards left side the threads or rods on right pulls it
back this keep building in position and minimizes the structural damage and human death.

Frugal Innovation:-

 Shock Absorbers
When an earthquake strikes to building structure, the horizontal motion of the building causes the piston
in each damper to push against the oil, transforming the quake's mechanical energy into heat.
 Replaceable Fuses
The metal teeth of the fuses absorb seismic energy as the building rocks. If they "blow" during an
earthquake, they can be replaced relatively quickly and cost-effectively to restore the building to its
original, ribbon-cutting form.

Disruption:-

 The reality is that for many people the options for how to improve the quality of their shelter are
extremely limited, by their lack of means, by their poor access to materials, and in many cases by
the insecurity of their situation. The issue then is not primarily how to identify or develop
techniques which will, but it is rather how to ensure that any techniques which are introduced are
both accessible and capable of adaptation to meet local and individual needs and the abilities of
each family.
 Critical analysis is required for safe design. And to get the critical section it is necessary to
improve the software which takes into account the number of trials i.e. various positions of live
loads. The software should be improved in such a way that it should take automatically all
positions of live load on floors/beams for critical analysis

NEW METHOD DEVELOPMENT:-

The most important advanced techniques of earthquake resistant design and construction are:

 Base Isolation Devices : Separate building from building foundation by bearing pads
a) Lead rubber bearing b) Spherical Sliding Isolation System

(Base Isolation Bearing) (Energy dissipating dampers)

 Energy Dissipation Devices: Special devices introduced in building to absorb the energy produced by
Seismic Wave. Example – Viscous Damper, Friction Damper and Metallic Damper.

EXISTING IMPROVEMENTS:-

In recent earthquake resistant technology rubber bearing and small dampers are introduced for small structures
in earthquake prone area.In Japan, wooden buildings have been used for many years, and people often say,
“Traditional wooden structures, such as temples, are very resistant to earthquakes.

COST EFFECTIVENESS :-The benefits of constructing earthquake resistant buildings are the saving in
property damage, injuries, and lives that accrue in the event of earthquake. The costs are the additional
resources required to ensure that building are resistant.

PRODUCTIVITY :-

 Since light weight elements are used in earthquake resistant structures due to which overall load of
structure decreased and hence cross section of element reduced and therefore cost of construction of
earthquake resisting structure decreased.
 Though earthquake proof structure couldn’t be constructed yet but to get enough time to adopt secure
steps to exit safely from building during earthquake, these earthquake resisting structure found to be
most reliable.
