Why did students don’t like reading?

Many of us are not motivated in doing reading assignment. We all hate the feeling of

reading especially if their English teacher makes us read a book that we clearly are not

interested. Half of the time these books looks like a Bible, those books are really thick. Hoeft

(2012) reports that 56%-68% of students in a first-year class reported that they did not read

assigned material before class. The most common reasons students give to explain why they

did not read assigned materials are:

● They had too much to read.

● Their work schedule does not allow enough time for extensive reading.
● Their social life leaves little time for reading.

As a student I personally don’t like reading because it’s not something that is appealing
to me. If I were to read something I will read an article for example I like reading missing
cases.

Speaking of for some people reading missing

person or true crime article maybe something overwhelming,

but not for me. It’s Something that I found interesting

because I want to know what happened and how it

happened. For example, right now I’m reading an article

about a lady who went missing in California. For some

people reading a missing person case is something

overwhelming because you wouldn’t wish for someone in your life to disappear. I understand

it’s something heartbreaking. “It's been reported that on average, 90,000 people are missing in

the United States at any given time. While many of them end up being found, alive or dead,
many others remain missing to this day” (Showbiz CheatSheet). I’m really passionate about

reading missing cases because most of the time there’s not a lot of evidence, so the police have

to drop the case, basically give up. I personally think we shouldn’t give up because that means

you're giving up someone’s life.

All right I already talked about what I like reading, but what is something that I don’t like

reading. I as any other student I don’t usually completing assignments

because I’m not motivated in reading, unless if the assignment is going to

affect my grade. For example Shakespeare’s writing is not something that

is appealing to me because it is a hassle to read the original text to the

translation. I honestly think I learn more if my teaching gave us extra

support like mini quizzes and other things would be something that will

keep us motivated. “Hoeft tried each strategy in one of three different

courses. She found that reading quizzes and supplementary graded work successfully

motivated students to complete assigned reading (74% of students in a course that used

reading quizzes; 95% of students in a course that used an assigned, graded reading journal).

Although more students reported reading when the journal assignment was used as a motivator,

an independent measure of reading comprehension indicated that quizzes improved

comprehension more than the journal assignment” (Claudia j. stanny,Ph.D.,Director).

Many students lack of motivation when complaining about an assignment. How can we

approach that problem maybe mini quizzes could be a solution. In order to keep students

interested in reading. Their teachers should provide some sort of support to help their students

to be motivated in doing their assignments.
