Description: For my Senior Presentation, I want to explore how characters are fleshed out and
developed through their costumes and makeup. I will examine characters from all different
movie genres and how their costumes impact both the story and their development throughout
the film. I will research how costuming and makeup can tell a story that further deepens the plot
of the film. The script of a film can have a heavy influence on what types of costumes/special fx
makeup are made, and the script is where time restraints such as time period, setting, and other
elements are put into place. The genre of the film can also have an influence on the type of
makeup done and the costumes made. I plan on creating videos from different genres to show the
diversity in costume design and makeup. The different genres of my films will also have
different character types created to also showcase diversity. I will also be writing scripts for each
video project I create to help create these restraints for my costumes/makeup. All of my work
Rationale for Choosing Topic: I’m extremely passionate about costuming and makeup in film
and in general. It’s been a passion of mine since I was little, and I didn’t consider doing it for my
senior presentation because it felt too theater-focused. However (with some help), I was able to
blend two of my favorite things together: creating good characters and costumes to go along with
it. I’ve been creating original characters since I started playing the table-top role playing game
Dungeons and Dragons. Creating a character is a major part of the game, and I love doing it.
This senior presentation topic really allows me to be creative and create things from all different
genres that I’m truly passionate about. I believe costuming and makeup is a huge part of making
a film artistic and beautiful. All good movies have costumes that fit each character and their
personality type. I want to be able to tell a story through my characters, costumes, and makeup.
