Introduction
Provide an overview of what organisational behaviour is and why it is important for managers to

Task 1

Ryanair’s culture and the nature of power and political behaviour of its management

Have you:

 Provided a brief introduction to what organisational culture is/means? Included appropriate

citations for your definitions e.g. Schein, Hofstede?
 Identified the culture within Ryanair – using Handy or Deal and Kennedy’s typologies (or another
suitable alternative)? Have you provided evidence to support this cultural type?
 Provided a brief definition of power (and cited this)?
 Identified the main type(s) of power evident in Ryanair – using French and Raven’s power types
(or suitable alternative)? Provided evidence to support this?
 Provided a brief definition of political behaviour and how this affects an organisation, citing
relevant theory e.g. Chanlat? Provided evidence to support this?

How the culture you identified in (a) have affected the feelings and behaviour of staff
and ultimately performance of Ryanair.

Have you:

 Applied the theory in addressing how culture can affect staff (what does Hofstede’s or
Handy’s/Deal and Kennedy’s work say are the implications of cultural type you have identified?
 Related this back to what has happened in Ryanair (i.e. have you provided evidence to support
your assertions)?
 Developed depth to your answer by linking power/politics to organisational culture to show how
they interrelate?
Task 2

individual and team performance and help Ryanair to succeed.

Have you:

 Provided a definition of motivation?

 Noted the difference between content and process theories of motivation?
 Applied at least one content theory and one process theory of motivation to Ryanair
 Related your answer to both individual and team performance and how this will help the
organisation to succeed?
 Avoided simply describing the models/theories???

functional, problem solving, project and virtual teams) and why this range of teams is
important to the success of the organisation.

Have you:

 Explained briefly, the importance of effective team working in organisations today?

 Covered each team type: functional; problem solving; project; virtual
 Applied your coverage of team types to Ryanair?
 Brought the coverage of team types together to explain why all of these types of teams are
important to Ryanair?
Using relevant team theory, such as Belbin’s team types and Tuckman and Jensen’s
group development models, analyse what would make the teams at Ryanair more
effective.

Have you:

 Introduced this section with a brief coverage of why it is important to have effective
teams/groups in the workplace?
 Analysed how the application of Belbin’s and Tuckman and Jensen’s work (and/or the work of
other researchers) could improve team effectiveness in Ryanair? (to do this you need to consider
what is behind both of these models and then you can address the question)
 Provided examples as to how the models would make a difference?

Evaluate how the use of path-goal theory could improve team performance and
productivity in Ryanair.

Have you:

 Briefly provided a cited definition of path-goal theory?

 Applied the elements within the module to evaluate how these could improve performance and
productivity?
 Provided evidence back to what currently happens in Ryanair, to demonstrate how this model
could help?

organisational structure in Ryanair?

Have you:

 Clearly identified a number of barriers?

 Related these barriers to relevant theory – e.g. resistance to change, leadership, contingency,
organisational culture, communication etc.? Note: there is a wide range of theory you could
use here, so select a range that best fits the barriers you are discussing
 Provided evidence from your research of Ryanair as to why these are barriers
 Linked these barriers to the implementation of a new organisational structure in Ryanair i.e. have
you addressed the question?
Conclusion
