- Insufficient tension can result in sheet missfeeds. (in upper bins first)
Quick check:
- Select first bin only
- Set conveyer speed and suction level to maximum. - Turn the rythm
potentiometer to minimum.
- Poor sheet feed within the first five cycles is a sign that toothed belt requires
retensioning.

- Connect its negative lead to test point # 2 of the PWM-DAC PC board
(see illustration) page 2/6
- Select = air mode ( key "AIR" ).
- Select the highest level for the suction turbine by means
of key # 6 on control panel. 3
- Select the blower MODE with key # 2 and reduce level to with key
- Press "ENTER"
- Run through check panel procedure of page 3/1 up to step 12 "TURB" and push "ENTER" .
- Press key # 1 to start the turbine of first tower ( Key #2 for turbine tower #2, etc... )

Adjustments:
Inner turbine
- Connect positive lead to test point TP3 to trim the inner turbine (suction)
- Turn trimpot 2 for a reading of 7,5V – 0,01V.
* - Obturate the air intake .
- Turn turbine internal speed adjustment trimpot ccw up to turbine maximum speed,
turn it cw, until you hear it slowing down. Turn 1/8-turn backwards, (ccw ).

Outer turbine
- Decrease suction level to and increase blowing level to by
means of the keys # 3 and # 6 of the keyboard.
- Put positive lead to test point TP 4 and turn trimpot 1 for a reading of 7,5V – 0,01V.
* - Obturate the air intake of the outer turbine and proceed like for the inner turbine.
- Restore the tower to an operating condition.

At this point, a more accurate method is available to those having an electronic pressure
* cell such as 9.923.964 available. 3
- Select by means of key
- Obturate the air intake but provide for a thoroughfare for the pipe of the gauge.
- Turn the turbine internal speed adjustment trimpot for a reading of 350 mm water column.
- Increase the suction to , the reading should raise at least to 700.
- If not, go back to and readjust.

- n.b. This method better ensures that the air levels be absolutely identical in all the
towers of a collating line which is particularily important for sets made from more
than 10 sheets, or while using the feature "copy" with thinner sets.

Trouble shooting

Reminder: - There is a back-up battery on the master CPU board

which life is not eternal.
- Our oldest CPU are about 10 years of age now.
A low battery induces either:
1/ The disabling of the control panel
2/ The disabling of its reset key
3/ The loss of customized jobs
4/ The blinking of all the leds on the control panel
This should be reported by blinking “accu” message.
n.b. The same message may indicate a defective battery or its reloading
condition (collator not switched on for a long time)
Important
- No voltage drop can be measured on defective battery.
- Be careful not to damage anything when unsoldering the battery.

IMPORTANT

Notwithstanding the double sheet feed detector being switched off, ** the tower may stop
collating and have one of the double feed warning LEDs illuminated for a set having
actually one sheet in excess.

Reminder:
Each sheet picking is simultaneously inspected according to two different parameters to check
whether there is a twin sheet feed or not.

1. Measure of the opacity of the sheet(s) and comparison with the reference opacity
memorized during the calibration process individually for each selected bin.

2. Measure of the time the beam is interrupted by the sheet(s) and comparison with the
reference time memorized during the calibration process individually for each selected bin.
This detects sheets being dragged by the precedent one. The reason may be inadequate
separation air blast or poor valve tightness.
Method 2 is not skipped at toggle switch in OFF ** position.

3/3 BST10 - August 1996

Trouble shooting

Problem: collating interruptions by ghost double sheet feeds.

- The integrity of the collated set is OK.

- The link between what an observer notices and the origin of the fault is not very
clear.

Possible reason:
A short delay in the feed of one ( or several ) sheet(s) can be responsible for this
anomaly.

This overtime is detected by the double sheet feed detector and wrongly considered as a
double sheet

The delay can be due to;

• Untimed sticking of (a) sheet(s) to the punched belts where the

butterfly suction air valve does not seal well.

The easiest way to evidence a poor valve closing is to hold a sheet by hand
during the collating process. The collator detects and stops for this sheet
missfeed and all its trays are brought down.

Watch carefully if any pile upper sheet sticks to the belts. Where this hapens,
the valve is likely to work wrong.

• A jerky feeds of sheet ( short transportation interruption)

One of our colleagues recently had a hard time to find out that the fault was
neither to incriminate to the bin clutch, nor to the clutch drive signal, nor to the
sealing of the vacuum valve, nor to their control boards, but to a poor sheet
grip between bin nylon exit rollers and wheels.
Remember that we have repeatedly changed the force of the roller spring to
pull satisfactorilly sheets with all kinds of surface in any weight and size range.

BST10 Trouble shooting

Reminder

The loading trays lifting sensor detects infra-red light and stops the raising whenever the ream
of sheets is high enough to be sucked through the punched belts.

It is sensitive to strong direct or reflected sunlight as well.

Disturbing outside light may thus anticipate the tray stopping instruction and create undesirable
sheet missfeeds and associated collating interruptions.

Remedy:
Dim the interfering light source where possible, or turn the collator loading side in the shadow.
