CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The internet has become a primary vehicle for many individuals` day-to-

day activities, with the advent and historic growth of technologies such as electronic mail

(e-mail), instant messaging, online newspaper, eBooks, research databases, Weblogs,

eCommerce, and social networking sites and it is an increasing rarity for an individual in

the us to go even a day without some sort of interaction using an internet technology

(Horrigan, 2015). This means that social networking sites helped people on their everyday

life like communicating to other people and getting information. Through social

networking sites, people can easily expressed their insights and emotion to everyone. SNS

(Social Networking Sites) has also charged the way people socialize and interact. It not

only helped people stay in touch with existing new alliances. SNS has a big role specifically

in Science it is such a great help to the used studies by the used of video, getting information

and online tutorials.

A social networking site is an online platform that allows users to create a public

profile and interact with other users on the websites. Social networking sites usually have

a new user on the input a list of people with whom they share a connection and then allow

the people in the list to confirm or deny the connection. After connections were established,

the new user can search the network of connections to make more connections. Social

network are the main application under the umbrella of social media which comes with the

1
web 2.0 eras. Social Media is the fastest growing web application in the 21 st century. The

wide nature of application like Wikis, video streaming and application and social networks

make it the phenomenon of the century. Facebook users topped all social media

applications with over 2.27 billion active users in 2018 followed by twitter with 500 million

users.

According to Social network is helpful and convenient for discussions and

communication using social network as an informal learning tool (Hamat, Embi and

Hassan, 2012). On the other hand, the use of information and communication technology

(ICT) is an important factor that opened doors for distant learning and remote access of

educational material. The influence of social media usage on academic performance of

student in tertiary institutions, using Tamale Polytechnic as a case study (Al Hassan and

Abukari, 2015).

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the social networking site

affect the academic performance of the Senior High School students. This research

explained the background of the study, statement of the research problem, purpose of

research, importance of the research, limitation of research, definition of terms and

summary.

2
Background of the Study

According to Dr. Nomar Alviar of UP Manila National Teacher Training Center

for the Health Professions (2017), maximizing social media is crucial in transmitting and

constructing knowledge. Among the processes that social media can promote are feedback,

interactivity, integration and reflection. Social Networking Sites have been widely used

nowadays in our developing country. Most social networking sites were used to and

provide interactions with different people who has the same interests, likes and even real-

life connections. Nowadays, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

and others were attracting millions of people around the world especially the students SNS

had been the source of happiness for many students. Social Networking Sites have been a

trending topic nowadays and became viral among teenagers. Especially to the teenagers,

many were associated to social networking sites. Since teenagers wanted always to be in

with what is on-trend. Even education has been influenced by social networking sites

because the goal of education was immersed, and teachers were making far into the world

of online social networking sites for educational purposes.

Social Networking Site is the connection of friends or family together which allow

you to communicate easily. Lately, online social networking sites engaged students and

needed to be studied as distributors of information. The social networking site was being

used in various ways like blogging, chatting and forming communities or groups. Social

Networking Sites is a form of communication platforms that have been growing over the

past decade. It was a great way to produce good affiliation with your customers and positive

3
publicity around the internet. The most influential and popular networking sites are

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube which was affecting to academic performance in Science

of Senior High Students. According to Harrath and Alobaidy (2016) on the students of the

Arabian Gulf that there is a possitive impact of this technology at their academic level

through the useful and optimal use of social networking sites. This study aimed to give

advice and guidance to the future researcher including the students on how to properly use

the Social Networking Sites and its effect to Academic performance of Senior High School

students.

Theoretical Framework

Social Networking Theory is the study of how people, organization or groups

interact with others inside their network. Understanding the theory was easier when you

examine the individual pieces starting with the largest element, networks, and working

down to the smallest element, the actor.

Social Networking Sites Theory viewed social relationship in terms of nodes and

ties. Nodes are the individual actors within the network, and ties are the relationship

between the actors. There can be many kind of ties between the nodes. In its most simple

form, a social network was a map of all of the relevant ties between the nodes being studied.

The network can also be used to determine the social capital of individual actors. This

concept was often play in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties

are the lines.

4
The power of Social Network Theory rooted from its difference from traditional

sociological studies, which assumed the attributes of individual actors – whether they are

friendly or unfriendly, smart or dumb, etc.

Conceptual Paradigm

To easily understand the process of the study, the research paradigm was shown

below.

19
This study was conducted in CSTC (College of Sciences Technology and

Communication, Inc.) which is located at 28 Capitol Road, Purok Camia Brgy. 10, Lucena

City. We chose this school for the reason that it suited to our research and to accomplish

the research as soon as possible. We chose this school to make our survey easier and our

respondent is from the CSTC-Lucena. The researchers wanted to help the institution to

allow the students to use the social networking sites for academic purposes only.

Respondents of the Study

The selected respondents of this research were the students from College of

Science, Technology and Communication Inc.(CSTC). The overall population of Senior

High School Students in CSTC had five questionnaires for each strand; STEM, HUMMS,

ABM, H.E, I.C.T, and I.A. The researchers used a purposive sampling which researchers

relied on their own judgement when choosing members of population to participate in the

study. This made it further suitable for this research than any other form of sampling and

respondents picked randomly.

Research Instrument

The researchers used an instrument, a self-made questionnaire in form of checklist

to gather the needed data for the student’s profile. The draft of the questionnaire was drawn

out based on the researcher readings, professional literature and published thesis relevant

to the study.

The questionnaire-checklist was the main instrument used in data gathering. The

questionnaire has two parts. The questionnaire consisted of statement to determine the

20
impact of Social Networking Sites on academic performance in Science with a propose

infomercial. The questionnaires used 4 scale (4) Strongly Agree, (3) Agree, (2) Disagree

and (1) Strongly Disagree.

Data Gathering Procedure

First, the researcher conceptualized their questionnaire base on their insights. It

used critical thinking in writing questionnaire to make more valid and easy to understand

to respondents of this study. The researchers prepared the instruments to be used through

readings of the questionnaire-checklist of other studies just to obtain some ideas. The

respondents were given 10-15 minutes to accomplish the forms to prevent them from

giving cursory responses. The researchers conducted a survey of 55 students from various

strands of CSTC-Lucena who are the respondents of this research. The researchers used a

likert scale as a way of getting data on the impact of social networking sites on the student’s

academic performance that would need of researchers for this study.

Second, they validating their questionnaire to the professional teacher to knew the

quality of their questionnaire. The researcher validated it on time to get information or data

for this research.

Third, the researcher distributed questionnaire to the 55 respondents of this study.

After distribution of the questionnaires, there searchers computed correlation on the

data to the academic performance of the students. The researcher used formula in getting

the correlation of their study to the data gathered from the respondents. The researchers

went from one section to another on collecting the accomplished questionnaire.

21
Then, the researcher came up in analyzing the data gathered from the respondents

and know that Social Networking Sites affect the Academic Performance of the students.

It was analyzed the data to get the significance relationship between the variables of this

research.

And lastly, the researchers interpreted the data given from the respondents.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers used the following formula to distinguish, analyze, and interpret

the gathered data.

The statistical treatment employed in this research study were: (a) weighted

arithmetic mean; (b) frequency and percentage distribution; (c) Pearson correlation and

significance test.

For sub-problem one, the researchers used the Weighted Arithmetic Mean to

determine the level of self-efficacy of the respondents in terms of communication and

information. It has done using this formula:

4𝑓+3𝑓+2𝑓+𝑓
WM= 𝑛

Where in:

WM= Weighted mean

f = frequency

n = No. of respondents

22
In order to assess the usage level of SNS in communication the researchers used the
following standard:
WEIGHTED MEAN RANGE Verbal Description
4 3.26- 4.00 Strongly Agree (SA)
3 2.51- 3.25 Agree (A)
2 1.76-2.50 Disagree (D)
1 1.00-1.75 Strongly Disagree (SD)

For sub-problem two, frequency and percentage distribution was used by the

researchers to determine the percentage of the academic performance of the respondents in

Science. It has done using this formula:

𝑓
P= 𝑥 100
𝑛

Where in:

P= Percentage

f = frequency

n = No. of respondents

For sub-problem three, the researchers used Pearson product-moment correlation

coefficient to determine the relationship between the impact of social networking sites and

academic performance in Science. It has done using this formula:

𝑛( ∑ 𝑥𝑦)−(∑ 𝑥)( ∑ 𝑦)
r=
√[𝑛 ∑ 𝑥2 −( ∑ 𝑥) 2 ][𝑛 ∑ 𝑦 2 −(∑ 𝑦) 2 ]

23
The formula for Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was defined as:

Where: r =Pearson Product

n =Sample number

∑xy = sum of all product of Grand Weighted Mean

∑x = sum of Grand Weighted Mean

∑y = sum of mean grade of respondent

information got the highest average weighted mean with the total of 3.12 interpreted as

“Agree”. Meanwhile, the average weighted mean in terms of communication got the lower

weighted average mean has a total of 3.07 with the verbal description of “Agree”.

Similarly to the result gathered by (Khantie Dlamini 2017) that the use of social

media in education provides students with the ability to get more useful information, to

connect with learning groups and other education system that make education convenient.

This explained that the usage of communication and information are close enough to each

other to help the students in their academic performance in school.

frequency of one (1) or two percent (2%) only of the total respondents.

Similarly to the result gathered by (AFP Reaxnews 2018), new research has found

that when it comes to school performance, social media has little influence in a student’s

grades. It explained that social networking sites has a help to the students to get higher

grades after using social networking sites.

the information levels have a positive correlation and the said variable affect the academic

performance of the students in science.

Also it was verify by Selwyn (2015), Social Media undoubtedly generate new

opportunities to engaged students in higher education as they are effective at connecting

people and facilitating the exchange of information. It explained that more opportunity in

using Social Networking Sites to have a credible and legit information to be more good in

the said variable affect the academic performance of the students in science.

Similarly to the study of Monem (2018), Social Networking Sites has a positive

impact on the student’s language, intellectual, moral behavior and Academic Performance.

Social Networking Sites helps the students to build their ability to generate and more

fruitful not only on their houses but also to their academic performance. Through the use

of this, it easy to them to relate on other’s language, intelligence and behavior which the

students has a mentally growth through the use of Social Networking Sites.
