2.0) Abstract:

Since the launch of 4G service in Pakistan, many users have switched from 3G to 4G for better
internet services, but this is not the scenario of Socio-Economic class C. They’re still using their
old 2G/3G sims. This study aims to examine why this particular income group is reluctant to switch
their 3G sim to 4G sim. The data was collected from participants who belong to this income group
which includes office boys, shopkeepers, drivers, maids, technicians and mechanics. The research

3.0) Introduction:

On 23rd April 2014, 4G service was launched in Pakistan with Telenor,Zong & Warid being the
first ones to provide this service. Initially, this service was only used by higher income group as it
was considered a luxury good for a normal user.

With the passage of time, change in demands (availability of fast speed internet at all times) and
more consumption of internet from the users, telecoms identified this opportunity and decided to
expand its target market by offering more affordable packages. One problem that the telecoms are
still facing that the 3G sim doesn’t support 4G network, the user has to get his sim replaced (which
is free of cost) in order to avail the 4G services. Income groups like socio economic class C is still
using their old 2G/3G Sims due to numerous reasons despite 4G providing better internet services
affordable for this income group.

3.1) Research Significance & Objectives:

This research will analyze & provide an overall view why socio-economic class C is reluctant
converting 3G to 4G sim. Also, this research will identify the factors that are influencing the
decision of this economic class of not switching their Sims to 4G.
3.2) Theoretical & Practical Implications:

• This research will be unique because in the past no significant research has been
conducted in this context so it will become a base for further studies to be carried out.
• It will help the telecommunication sector to develop a better understanding that why
people are not switching from 3G to 4G and what practices can be implemented to
make this economic group a 4G customer.

4.0) Research Methodology:

Our research choice is a quantitative study as data is gathered through surveys. We collected data
via questionnaires from socio-economic class which includes includes office boys, shopkeepers,
drivers, maids, technicians and mechanics. The data collected is cross-sectional as the data is
collected only once and then analysis is made on the basis of the data. Unit of analysis is individual
because the data is collected from each individual through surveys.

Demographic in our survey include gender, occupation, area to which they belong, and age is as
follows

4.1) Questionnaire Design:

Most of the items of the questionnaire are designed by ourselves and some of the items are adopted
from past studies in different fields with slight moderations. The questionnaire consists of 5 parts
which include awareness, perception, physical hindrance, availability of franchise/retailer and
attention. The scale of the questions is polar.

The questionnaire consists of a total of 24 questions of which 4 are from awareness, 7 are from
perception, 4 from physical hindrance, 5 from availability of franchise/retailer and 4 from
attention.

5.0) Analysis & Results:

6.0) Discussion & Conclusions:
7.0) Limitations and Recommendations:

This study has several limitations that also represent worthwhile avenues for future research.
Firstly there was time constraint, the research can be more accurate and more data can be collected
if the time of the research is increased. Secondly, this research only covers limited areas in the
country, the accuracy of the research can be improved if maximum areas of the country are
covered.
