Why Reality Capture?
The Autodesk vision is to help people imagine,
design, and create a better world.
~80% of buildings are more than 20 years old
Current practice is a painful, manual, & inaccurate
process that results in costly change orders

Step 2 –Workflow with Ground Control Points
About GCPs and Coordinate Systems

▪ GCP = Ground Control Point = Survey Point

▪ GCPs can be set in “Spherical Coordinate System” like WGS84 as well “Projected
Coordinate System” like UTM and State Planes.
▪ LLA (Longitude, Latitude, Altitude) is listed as LL84 in the list of coordinate systems.
▪ Input for LL84 in GCPs is Long Lat to be consistent with Civil3D and Infraworks. In earlier builds it was Lat
Long.
▪ The user can select different input/output coordinate system.
▪ If no GCPs are used, GPS information embedded with each photo will be used for
geolocation.
▪ Geolocated point cloud (RCS) and orthoview (GeoTIFF) will be geolocated in InfraWorks
and AutoCAD Civil 3D when using GCPs as well as when not using GCPs.
▪ XYZ in local coordinate system is not supported yet.
Workflow with GCPs

▪ Open ReCap Photo

▪ “Create 3D”
▪ Select “Aerial”
▪ Select the source photos
▪ Add/remove images if
necessary
Check the GCP data
Setting GCPs in ReCap Photo

▪ Select ‘Ground Control Points’ on left side:

▪ You then have access to the Survey Points editor.

Setting GCPs in ReCap Photo
▪ In the Survey Point editor, select the coordinate system that was
used for the Ground Control Points:
Setting GCPs in ReCap Photo
▪ Open GCP_LL84.txt

▪ Copy paste the whole set of GCPs in ReCap

Photo
▪ Copy/paste also works with a CSV file or an
Excel sheet with auto-column detection!

▪ Note that some GCPs may be used as

“checkpoints”
▪ Those points will not be used by the stitching
engine, but they will be used to check the
accuracy of the reconstruction in the Quality
Report.
Setting GCPs in ReCap Photo
▪ When selecting a GCP, the “Filter by GPS” will limit
the number of photos to be displayed.

▪ For each photo, select a first photo where the

selected GCP appears.
