The Impact of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can have a life-altering impact on the individuals and families fortunate
enough to survive them. But the effect of natural disasters can be felt at the community,
city and state level, or many times can impact an entire country. Natural disasters can
have huge environmental impacts as well, even when human communities are relatively
unaffected. How well the impact of a disaster event is absorbed has much to do with the
intensity of the impact and the level of preparedness and resilience of the subject
impacted.
Site Selection. Often the likelihood, location, and severity of natural hazards are
used as criteria in selecting a site for a critical facility. For example, one study, which
identified areas warranting further study for use as disposal sites for hazardous
wastes, recommended that these disposal sites and facilities be located so as not to
adversely affect human health and safety, air and water quality, wildlife, critical
environmental resources, and urbanized areas.9/ Sites that may be subject to
inundation, washout, faulting, liquefaction, landsliding, or accelerated erosion were
deemed unacceptable.

During disaster- The response phase includes the search and rescue; fulfilling
basic humanitarian needs of victims ; assistance by regional, national and
international bodies etc.
Post disaster- Recovery phase starts after the immediate threat to human life
has subsided. The immediate goal of the recovery phase is to bring the affe cted
area back to some degree of normalcy. During reconstruction, the location or
construction material of the property is considered.
