Lesson Title / Content Area: ​The Music Culture of Haiti / Historical and Cultural Context

Age Level of Students: ​Fifth Grade

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to describe how music functions socially in Haitian culture.
2. Students will be able to sing a song in the language of Creole.
3. Students will be able to reflect on their learning through think/pair/share activities.

Standards: ​Visual & Performing Arts: Music Content Standards

3.1 Describe the social functions of a variety of musical forms from various
cultures and time periods.
3.3 Sing and play music from diverse cultures and time periods.

Anticipatory Set:

1. Ask all students to stand up, and tell them they are going to sing the ABC’s as a class.
2. Tell students they can sit back down, and guide reflection for what students just did.
3. Ask students to imagine if they were asked to perform what they just did at chapel.
4. Choose a few students to share their response.

Teacher Input:

1. Introduce the country of Haiti (location) and a brief history of the country.
2. Tell facts about the culture today (include language), and how their culture influences
music.
3. Share personal experience of the instances music was used while in country.
a. When the interns were asked to sing in church.
b. When the employees sang for two hours after the car accident.
c. When a Haitian couple had just been married the day prior, and they sang a song
to the church.
d. Before every lunch, the employees sang and prayed.

Teacher Modeling:

1. Sing the song performed in church for the class.

Teacher Check for Understanding:

1. Ask Groups 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6.


2. Show the groups the signs with the words on it.
3. Say, and have the students repeat, each word they will sing in the song.
4. After, have students practice singing their line for the song twice.
5. Ask the groups to sit down, and repeat the process with all groups.

Guided Practice:

1. Have students sing the song all together as a group.

Closure:

1. Think/Pair/Share Activity
a. Present two questions to the class (say & write).
b. Have the students think about these questions as you write them down, then ask
them to share with one another (in groups of two or three) their responses.
c. Choose a few students to share their responses.
2. Closing remarks.

Independent Practice:

1. Students will be assigned homework to look up their favorite quote, bible verse, or song
lyric, and translate it to the language of Creole. Students will practice, at home,
pronouncing how they think the words would be pronounced. Then, they will bring in
this assignment to class tomorrow to share with their groups.

Materials:

1. Paper signs to guide students in their recitation of a Haitian song.

Duration: ​ 10 minutes.
