Definition of Narrative Text

A narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people (teks narasi adalah cerita imaginatif yang
bertujuan menghibur orang).

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

# Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced.
# Complication : Where the problems in the story developed.
# Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved.
# Coda / reorientation (optional) – lesson from the story

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Narrative Text:

– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
– Adverb of time (Once upon a time, one day, etc)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba,
etc)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My name is Snow White).

Kind of Narrative Text:

- Folklore (Merupakan cerita kepercayaan yang telah lama ada di masyarakat)

- Legend (Merupakan cerita yang sudah lama tersebar luas di masyarakat dan diyakini sebagai sebuah
sejarah atau dipercaya sebagai hal yang benar terjadi di masa lalu, biasanya disebabkan karena adanya
bukti peninggalan yang masih tersisa)
- Myth (Merupakan jenis narrative yang berhubungan dengan hal gaib, menceritakan asal usul suatu
kebudayaan, yang biasanya dihubungkan dengan makhluk gaib seperti dewa dan sebagainya)
- Fable (Merupakan jenis cerita yang menggunakan tokoh hewan di dalamnya)
- Short Story (Merupakan cerita yang bersifat fiktif atau hanya merupakan khayalan)

CINDERELLA

Orientation
Once upon time, there was a beautiful girl called Cinderella. She lived with her stepsisters and
stepmother. They were very bossy. She had to do all the housework.
Complication
One day an invitation to the ball came to the family. Her stepsisters did not let her go, so Cinderella was
very sad. The stepsisters went to the ball without her.
Resolution
Fortunately, the good fairly came and helped her to get to the ball. At the ball, Cinderella danced with
the prince. The prince felt in love with her then he married her. They live happily ever after.

A. Translate the paragraph above into Bahasa!

Cinderella

Pada suatu hari, ada seorang gadis cantik bernama Cinderella. Ia tinggal bersama saudara tiri
dan ibu tirinya. Mereka sangat suka memerintah. Dia harus melakukan semua pekerjaan rumah.

Suatu hari, ada undangan pesta dansa untuk keluarganya. Suadara tirinya tidak
memperbolehkan Cinderella untuk datang, Cinderella sangat sedih. Saudara tirinya pergi tanpa dia.

Untungnya, peri baik datang dan membantunya untuk datang ke pesta dansa. Di pesta dansa,
Cinderella berdansa dengan pangeran. Pangeran jatuh cinta dan menikahi Cinderella. Merekapun hidup
bahagia selamanya.

Harry the dirty dog

Orientation

Harry is the white dog with the black spots who like everything. He took and hid his brush in soil. And
then he played in the dirty places.

Complication

When he back home, his family didn’t recognize him. Because harry was very dirty. Harry was very sad.
And Harry tried to make his family recognize by his tricks.

Resolution

Harry digging the soil and found his brush. And then he ran and bring his brush to bathroom at his
house.

Moral Value

Don’t play in the dirty place. Because, it can make your family didn’t recognize you.
