Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter provided the overview of the problem. For its clearer indication, the

different parts such as the Introduction, Statement of the Problem, Hypotheses, Scope and

Delimitations, Conceptual Framework, Significance of the Study, and Definition of

Terms were presented.

Introduction

Intellectual capacity is a skill that demands a person to think critically and to

discover the relation between discipline and problem solving in existing or constantly

changing circumstances. In addition to that there are other factor that contributes a

person’s intellectual abilities such as memory capacity, creative problem solving and

vocabulary. However, the scientist has different definition to intellectual capacity.

Intellectual capacity must include high level of theoretical reasoning and intellectual

skills, the capacity to acquire knowledge and problem solving abilities (Martin, 2018).

Leadership skills is defined as the capability of an individual to demonstrate and

guide members to attain target goals (Rouse, 2014). It is moulding, organizing, and

leading students in a situation wherein to make sure that when the problems arise it will

be solved immediately. Just like in Rogationist College, leadership is prevalent. We can

mostly see leaders’ skills when it comes to school and classroom activities. They are the

ones who handle the practices and performances in order to show their competitiveness.

Most of the times students choose their leaders based on a person’s physical attributes,

popularity and mostly intellectual capacity only. These cause problems for them and for
the school because unwise voters equate to wrong leaders and wrong leaders equate to

bad government. Thus, the researchers want to know the correlation between intellectual

capacity and leadership skills of the senior high school students of Rogationist College.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the correlation between intellectual capacity and

leadership skills of the senior high school students of Rogationist College for the

Academic Year 2018-2019. In line with this, the following questions were also

addressed:

1. What is the intellectual capacity of senior high school students in Rogationist

College?

2. What are the different leadership skills of senior high school students in

Rogationist College?

3. Is there a significant relationship between intellectual capacity and leadership

skills?

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant correlation between intellectual capacity and leadership

skills of senior high school students of Rogationist College.

Scope and Delimitation

The research entitled “A Correlational Study Between Intellectual Capacity and

Leadership Skills of the Senior High School Students of Rogationist College S.Y. 2019-

2020" aims to expound how these two variables can affect each other. It will cover the
class officers of all the sections in the Senior High School Department in Rogationist

College. Aside from that, in getting the intellectual capacity of the respondents the

researchers will provide an IQ test to conduct the result and the study is assume to run

throughout the first semester only.

In addition, the researchers will not ask for academic background from the

respondents. So the average and academic awards are not included. The researchers will

also degrade the use of personal data from the respondents and will only focus on the task

that being asked in the research.

Conceptual Framework

The diagram that will be illustrated the variables of the study “A Correlational Study

between Intellectual Capacity and Leadership Skills of the Senior High School Students

of Rogationist College S.Y. 2019-2020”

This diagram showed what researchers needed to find out from their respondents, the

process on how the data were gathered, and the outcome after the data had been analyzed

and evaluated.

 As shown in the diagram, first, the researchers determined the different

leadership skills of the respondents as well as to know the intellectual capacity of

the respondents. The data were obtained with the use of surveys and

questionnaires, and were analyzed and evaluated through the use of statistical

treatments. With theses, the relationship between intellectual capacity and

leadership skills of the senior high school students of Rogationist College were

determined.

Significance of the Study

Students. The gathered data of this study can help them to determine their intellectual

capacity and assess their leadership skills. It also serves as a guide for them to come up

with different strategies on how to develop their leadership skills by evaluating their

intellectual capacity.

Teachers. This study will greatly help them to know how their students show leadership

skills and it can also help them to guide their students by conducting plans on how to deal

with their students' different intellectual capacities.

Parents. This study would be beneficial for them since they will be aware and

knowledgeable about the intellectual capacity of their child. Thus, they might help them

to develop and foster their child's skills.


Administration. This study will be beneficial for them because the result of this study

might be the basis of changing their standards of molding their students in becoming

leaders.

Future Researchers. This study can be a learning paradigm to them to enhance their

knowledge about the said topic and the data gathered will serve as their basis in

conducting a new study related to this.

Definition of Terms

Intellectual. Person’s judgement in the current and possible situation in front of him/her.

Leader.Someone who organize and mold a situation to make sure everything is under

control.\

Intellectual Capacity. Ability of an individual to higher level of learning, thinking and

acting.

Leadership skills. An ability to lead a group of individual or an organization.
