SUSTAINABLE/MODERN ROADS
• Sustainability is the ability to meet our needs without compromising the ability of
next generations to meet theirs. This concept integrates the economic, societal
and environmental aspects.
• Sustainability can be also defined as a way to use a resource so that the latter is not
depleted or permanently damaged.
• it is a system of roads which limit their impact on the environment to a minimum
through different sustainable practices.
FEATURES OF MODERN ROADS:
Ø Recyclable
Ø Cost savings
Ø Low emissions/energy
Ø Durability/Strength
Ø Quiet pavements
Ø Cool/Permeable pavement
Ø Low maintenance
Concrete Recycling
• Breaking, removing and crushing hardened concrete from an acceptable
source. •
• Old concrete pavements often are excellent sources of material for
producing RCA.
• Conservation of materials
• Recycling this material, as with recycling any existing concrete material,
presents significant sustainable benefits, including reduction of landfill use
and virgin aggregate use.

• Potential for improved pavement performance

-Foundation stability; angular, rough texture and secondary cementing
action.
- Concrete strength; partial substitution of RCA for virgin fine
aggregate may increase concrete compressive strength.
SCRAP WASTE TIRE
• This material makes a new break through for modern construction materials
and methodology due to the impact of scarce resources and economical
constraints.
• The scrap waste tire and hot asphalt were mixed with batch aggregates.
• The developments of the project concentrate on the waste tire which was
the main concern of the study is to maximize its value for another beneficial
purpose.
PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS
• Permeable paving is a method of paving vehicle and pedestrian pathways to
enable infiltration of stormwater runoff.
• with a high porosity that allows rainwater to pass through it into the ground
below.
LOW EMISSIONS/ENERGY

• The road sector produces the highest level of greenhouse gas, directly,
through fossil energy used in mining, transportation, paving works and
indirectly through the emissions coming from vehicles.
• Increase number of vehicles Traffic Increase in Pollution
LOW EMISSION ASPHALT (LEA)
DURABILITY/STRENGTH

• Durability is the resistance to environmental condition.

- Initial Construction
- Maintenance
- Environmental factors/Traffic Loads
• Strength of material is the ability to withstand an applied load without
failure or plastic deformation.
QUIET PAVEMENT
• By paving roads and highways with asphalt, noise experienced both inside
and outside homes and businesses can be significantly reduced.
• There is one type of noise that can be effectively treated at its source
• Road Noise
• Noise pollution comes in many forms and can deeply affect communities —
from social costs, including disrupted sleep and, in extreme cases, mental
illness and cardiac disorders, to lower home values. Mitigating noise with
sound barriers can be expensive and in some areas difficult to construct due
to limited right of ways. For these reasons, road owners and the pavement
industry are working to address traffic noise at the source with a smart,
sound pavement choice — asphalt.
COOL/PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

• Known as water-retentive pavements, are considered as cool pavements

because of the evaporation of water retained at the pavement.
• Water-holding agents can be added in the pavements to enhance the water
retention.
• Cool pavements are reflective/permeable pavements that help lower
surface temperatures and reduce the amount of heat absorbed into
the pavement.
ADVANTAGES:
• • Higher resistance to deformation at increased road temperature
• • Improved adhesion and bonding with automobiles.
• • Serves for heavy transport.
• • Higher softening point.
• • Higher skid resistance.
• • Smother car break and accident reduction.
• • Higher elongation and tensile strength,
• • Higher elasticity.
• • Less thermal sensitivity, cracks prevention.
• • Reduced degree of hollows for driving comforts.
• • High resistance to moisture due to rains.
• • Resistance to degradation due to high temperature.
• . • Longer road pavement life and lesser maintenance.
• • Economical benefits, as there is no need to replace pavement, there is no need for additional equipment
use.
DISADVANTAGES:
• Tires are very difficult to recycle
• Tires are Bulky and Heavy
• High Leaching Probability
• Poor Source of Rubber and Quality
• Heat sensitive
• Cleaning Process
- Toxics present in the co-mingled plastic waste would start leaching
• During the road laying process
- In the presence of chlorine will definitely release noxious HCL gas.

• After the road laying process

-The components of the road, once it has been laid, are not inert.
San Miguel Corporation(SMC)
• SMC will be working with leading materials science company, Dow Chemical, for the project that will use
hard-to-recycle plastics as an alternative raw material input to asphalt for road building.
• Building roads out of recycled plastics to help reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment.
• Will help our environment and at the same time improve the quality of our infrastructure projects. SMC will
initially test the technology in smaller municipal roads, sidewalks and parking lots.

Makati Development Corporation(MDC)

• MDC was the construction division of Ayala Corporation, the company that
developed Makati into a premier financial and commercial district. It was in 1974,
after the transformation of Makati, that MDC was formally incorporated and
engaged in subdivision development and government’s highways construction
activities as a separate and independent entity.
• They also build Cost Efficiency and Sustainability projects.
As part of their continuing efforts to protect the environment, Republic
Cement and Green Antz Builders launched recently the first-ever corporate
partnership ecobrick hub in the Philippines for the benefit of Barangay Prinza
in Teresa, Rizal.

• Green Antz is known for its ecobricks. Made from a mixture of cement and shredded plastic
laminates such as sachets, these ecobricks make use of residual plastic wastes that have no
value and are no longer recyclable.
• Green Antz is a company which developed a way to convert flexible plastics to
construction materials
• Ecobricks also cost less on a per square meter basis.
• Using ecobricks is to create a sustainable and environmentally responsible
community.
Bonifacio Global City- (also known as BGC, Global City, or The Fort) is a
financial and lifestyle district in Metro Manila, Philippines.
