SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS
Initiated by YOUTHS
1. HowtUyoga (Italy)

This youth-led project consists of Tanzanian coffee farmers on the creation and
management of a plant that would allow the reuse of organic waste resulting from coffee
farming to produce mushroom self-cultivation kits. This project aims to make leaders of
developing countries spread and develop innovative and sustainable agricultural
practices. Objectives of this project include:
 reuse of agricultural waste,
 the diversification of agricultural products,
 increased income for local farmers,
 better food and health coverage due to improved micronutrient intake, and
 access to renewable energy sources.

HowtUyoga has a significant, direct or indirect, impact on at least 9 separate

SDGs. These goals include:
 Goal no. 1 – No Poverty
 Goal no. 2 – Zero Hunger
 Goal no. 3 – Good Health & Well-Being
 Goal no. 4 – Quality Education
 Goal no. 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
 Goal no. 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
 Goal no. 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
 Goal no. 13 – Climate Action
 Goal no. 15 – Life of Land
2. Barsha Pump (The Netherlands)

Barsha, meaning rain in Nepalese, is the name given to this hydro-powered

irrigation pump. It has been developed with a vision to provide a sustainable irrigation
solution to farmers across the world. This waterwheel utilizes the energy from the flow of
rivers and canals to pump water, regardless of the flow velocity.
The Barsha Pump provides a sustainable solution to farmers across the world. It
works on the principle of spiral pumping, using the kinetic energy of the waterwheel to
pump water to higher elevations without the need for active mechanical parts to create
pumping action. The pump consists of spirals where air is compressed between water
columns resulting in air pressure that lifts the water.
The Barsha Pump and the offered payment mechanisms allow resource-
constrained smallholder farmers to access irrigation technology, key to cash cropping and
making a good salary. It also allows farmers to grow high water-demanding crops, which
diversify their diets along with the diets of the people in the surrounding villages.
Barsha Pump has a significant, direct or indirect, impact on at least of the following
SDGs. These include:
 Goal no. 1 – No Poverty
 Goal no. 2 – Zero Hunger
 Goal no. 3 – Good Health and Well-Being
 Goal no. 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
 Goal no. 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
 Goal no. 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
 Goal no. 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
 Goal no. 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
 Goal no. 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
 Goal no. 15 – Life of Land
