HIP OUTREACH PROGRAMME

by KAM HUI MIN

On 13 November 2018, we had been invited by the English Unit of Sekolah

Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Pasir Kechil to help in the “HIP Outreach Programme”. The
objective of this programme was to increase the English proficiency of students by providing
increased exposure to English. 26 of TESL students and 5 lecturers were attended this
programme.

There were 100 students involved in this programme. All participants had gathered at
the parking area of the school at 9:15am. We had introduced ourselves to the students and
given them a briefing about the programme. This programme consisted 10 stations of
language games, ice breaking session and closing ceremony.

The first activity was ice breaking session. Time allocated for this activity was 20
minutes. In this activity, students formed groups based on their birth month and similar
sibling count. After that, the facilitators divided the students into 10 groups and distributed
the mark sheet to each group. While the team was conducting the ice breaking session with
the students, the stationers went to the places fixed by the school to set up their stations.

After the ice breaking session, it was the time for station games. Students went to
their first station according to their group number. For example, group 1 went to station one.
Time allocated for each station was 10 minutes. The details of the language games in each
station were written down in Appendix 1.

At the beginning of the station games, we had encountered some problems. One of
the problem was the delay of time in some stations due to the long walking distance between
the stations. To solve this, we had lengthen the time allocated for each station from 10
minutes to 15 minutes including the time for changing station.

After the students finished all the stations, all of us including the school teachers
gathered at Makmal Bahasa for the closing ceremony. Before the closing ceremony started,
there was a feedback session. The students rated the programme highly and hoped that it
would be held next year.
In the closing ceremony, the Senior Assistant Teacher, Puan Fauziah Bt Hussin had
given a short speech to the students and addressed the appreciation to all the teacher
trainees and the lecturers by given us the appreciation cert.

Besides, the school requested us to choose the top 4 to be given prizes. Group 1 won
the first prize with 467 marks; Group 8 won the second prize with 456 marks; Group 3 won
the third prize with 421 marks and the fourth prize is given to Group 6 with 413 marks. The
closing ceremony ended with photography session.

The programme was a huge success because all the students participated actively in
all the activities throughout the programme.
