smooth to reduce to a minimum dirt accumulation and shall maintain a
coefficient of transmission of the order of 88 percent or better.

7. The refractor-frame assembly shall be hinged to the body and maintained

in place with stainless steel toggles or other approved means. A synthetic
rubber or water repellant felt gasket shall ensure weather-tightness. The
structural support of the gasket shall be designed to protect the latter from
direct sunlight.

8. The lamp socket shall be high grade porcelain mounted in such a way as
to allow the socket to be adjusted to at least three different positions to
adjust the lamp at focal point. A locking system shall prevent the
loosening of the lamp.

9. The materials selected shall be able to withstand damage, aging or

alteration in their structural or physical properties due to severe local
conditions and the heat emitted by the lamp.

10. A suitable terminal block shall be provided to allow connection of the

internal wiring and supply cables including looped cables, and shall be
clearly marked. Provisions shall be made to facilitate maintenance and
easy disconnection, and quick replacement of individual components.

C. Area Lighting Photoelectric Time and Control:

1. The area lighting system shall be controlled by a photoelectric cell whose

normally closed contact is in series with the contact of an astronomic dial
synchronous motor driven time switch, with integral 16 hour reserve and
rated for use on the same control supply system. Control voltage shall be
127 Volt, 60 Hz. Refer to Royal Commission Standard Drawing RC-E-9.

2. The photocell/time switch control arrangement shall be provided with a

MANUAL-OFF-AUTO selector switch for access by authorized personnel
only.

3. The photocell/time switch arrangement shall control the lighting

automatically when the selector switch is in the "AUTO" position, through
a magnetic contactor rated for the ambient temperature and inductive load
conditions. The control equipment shall be located in a separate low
voltage compartment of the area lighting transformer or in an independent
outdoor control cabinet.

4. The photoelectric cell shall be mounted on the luminaire of the area

lighting pole nearest the area lighting transformer or control cabinet and
wired back to the control coil of the magnetic contactor. The time switch
and photoelectric cell shall be weather-tight and preferably located
adjacent to the magnetic contactor.

5. The photoelectric cell shall be of weatherproof and dust-tight

construction. It shall be capable of field adjustment for light levels of 10 to
100 lux, and shall have a turn-on/turn-off differential of 5 to 10 lux. The
cell axis shall be aligned along the magnetic East-West axis and it shall
be set to turn on automatically at a light level of 10 lux.

Rev. D, 30 May ‘07
6. The time switch shall open the magnetic contactor in the event of failure
of the photoelectric cell, and shall be set to operate after a field adjustable
time lag.

D. Area Lighting Luminaire Control Gear: Control gear, shall be of the removable
type 60 Hertz with power factor compensated to at least 0.9. The ballast shall be
of a type specially adapted for the particular make of lamps selected. The lamp
shall be able to start with at least plus or minus ten percent of the voltage value
and continue in normal operation with dips attaining 20 percent for four seconds.
The ballast shall be of the isolated type. The secondary shall be grounded.

2.9 EMERGENCY LIGHTING AND EXIT SIGNS

A. Emergency lighting and exit signs shall be completely self contained and fully
automatic in operation. They shall normally operate on A.C. system and upon
failure of the normal power system, low voltage lamps shall be battery powered.

B. The units shall be capable of operating in the emergency mode for a minimum of
1.5 hours at not less than 87.5 percent of normal battery voltage.

C. The units shall operate on a 127 volt A.C., 60 hertz normal power system.

***** OR *****

D. The unit shall operate on a 220 volt A.C., 60 hertz normal power system.

E. The exit signs shall have extruded or die-cast aluminum housing with
manufacturer's standard finish and shall be mounted as shown on the drawings.

F. The exit signs shall have stencil face plate and 20 mm x 150 mm red letters.
Directional arrows shall be provided as shown on the drawings or as required to
indicate location of exit, with "exit" printed in Arabic and English.

G. The units shall be equipped with fully automatic charger to maintain the battery
fully charged at all times, a test switch to test the emergency circuit, and a pilot
light to indicate operating status of the unit.

H. The lamps shall light the face of the sign and provide downlight. The units shall
contain the necessary equipment to extend lamp life.

I. All batteries in the emergency power supply system shall be long life, completely
sealed, rechargeable, gel cell type or lead composition type conforming to SAS
14: Acid Batteries.

M. The units shall have continuous burning lamps when operating in emergency
mode.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install lighting fixture of type and at the location as shown.

1. Provide 6 mm minimum clearance between surfaces when fixture is

mounted on a concrete surface.

2. Mount fixture bases rigidly to the surface.

3. Where aluminum is placed in contact with dissimilar metal, separate the

contact surface with gasket, non-absorptive tape or coating to prevent
corrosion.

B. Install light standard of type and at location shown with anchor bolts securely
embedded in concrete foundations.

C. Install fixture wires from junction box in branch circuit to the lighting fixture in
liquid-tight flexible conduit in accordance with Section 16050. Use water-tight
nipple for carrying wire between fixtures. Use fixture wire and connectors as
specified in Section 16050.

D. Ground the lighting fixture body.

E. Refer to General Design Criteria and Technical Guidelines, for minimum cable
size to be used for area lighting and road lighting circuits.

3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Test lighting fixtures and light standards for connection in accordance with the
wiring diagram and for proper operation.

RCMYAS Guide Spec. 16500-21 Contract No.

Rev. D, 30 May ‘07
B. Test fixture body for continuity to the grounding system.

C. Test illumination level in each area to confirm that the measured values are in
conformance with the design.
