I. Introduction
This article entitled Exploring the Maritime Words: An Introduction. It written by
I Wayan Dirgeyasa, he is the lecturer of English Department of Faculty
languages and Arts at State University of Medan and Maritime Academy
Indonesia Medan. It published in English Language Teaching and Research,
Volume 2(1). It published on Desember 2018. The ISSN number of the article is
2614-1108.
II. Summary
Maritime English (ME) is the language used in maritime world or maritime
industry worldwide. In line with Nomizura, ME is defined as:
a. The language used to communicate in all maritime-specific situation,
on-board, ship-to-ship, and ship-to-shore.
b. It includes maritime specific terminology-navigation, on-board
operations, roles and responsibilities, health and safety, emergencies.
c. English which has been simplified for use by seafarers of all
nationalities.
d. Maritime English has been codified by the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) as Standard Marine Communication Phrases
(SMCP)
e. General English language skills need to be good enough to combine with
SMCP to achieve consistent and clear communication at sea.

The IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) :

1. To assist in the greater safety navigation and of the conduct of the ship
2. To assist maritime training institutions in meeting the objectives
mentioned
3. To standardize the language used in communication for navigation at
sea.

B. The Grammatical Patterns

The common grammatical pattern of Maritime English are:
 First, Giving Instruction between and among crew member. The
frequent use of Giving Instruction is when there is emergency on board
such as collision, grounding, sinking, fire, etc.
 Second, The ambigous words, some words in English have meanings
depending on the context in which they appear.
 Third, Prowords, In maritime, the radio operators have great
responsibility. Messages must delivered quickly. But simple error can
cause major problems. For the reason, radio communication relies on
procedural words, or prowords.
C. The Vocabulary Usages
Vocabularuy usages in maritime english is unique when talk about
measurement. Nautical measurement are differrent from land
measurement.
III. Evaluation
a. Strengthness
This article is explained all the topic briefly but clearly. The writer
explain about the main topic, what is the article tells about not really
long but the information was delivered well to the readers. The use of
terms are really easy to be understood by the readers. The writer
provided the finding briefly but it had covered all the points, then the
readers can be understood about the information or finding that had
been found by the writer.
b. Weaknesses
The weaknesses of this article is the writer does not provide the
theoritical framework and does not explain about how the writer was
conducted the article, how the writer collecting and analyzing the data.
Beside the writer also does not provide many theories to support the
 article. The research question and the background is not really clear, and
also there is no suggestion.

IV. Conclusion
This article is discussed about Maritime English (ME), which Maritim
English is the language used in maritime world or maritime industry
worldwide. This article consist of some good information about ESP
particularly in Maritime field. In this article, the writer explore information
about English in Maritime field, in terms of Spelling and figure, grammatical
patterns, and vocabulary usages.
Based on the explanation above, this articles is very useful for the
readers to improve their knowledge about ESP particularly relate to Maritime
English. Other researcher can use this article as their reference to support their
research which is related to Maritime English.
