NewsVision Lab National/Local News Newscast Assignment

1. The title of the newscast I was able to watch was the “6:00 Evening News.”
2. The time of the newscast I viewed was at 6:00 pm.
3. The channel of the newscast I watch was “CBS 9 WUSA”.
4. The anchors for the newscasts were lead anchor, Lesli Foster, Eric Flack who had a
reporter package, Topper Shuck who reported weather, and sports which was delivered
by Darren Haynes.
5. The attire for the newscast was both professional and business casual.
6. For the reporters who were in the studio, they utilized lavalier microphones while those
who were out in the field used handheld microphones.
This newscast was a mix of different emotions. The subject matter covered was a great
mix serious, light-hearted, and straight forward. WUSA I noticed is all about giving
people information from a more relatable standpoint.
7. I enjoyed watching the newscasts and did not realize how formulaic the news could be.
The way the newscasts was structured flowed together and I did not feel like I was
receiving bad news after bad news.
What were the first 5 stories in the first “block” of the newscast (before the first commercial
break)
The first 5 stories in the first “block” were DC police officers being shot at, the Climate activists
shut down dc Intersections, Greta to World Leaders: How dare you!, President Denies
Inappropriate Phone Call, Teens Charged in Deadly Assault on Man , Study on Post Labor Day
School Start in MD,

What were the first 5 stories in the 2nd block of the newscast
There were not 5 stories present before the 2nd commercial, but the stories they did have were,
“Soldier with Cancer Fights to change law”, “6 year old Arrested and Handcuffed,” “Non-stop
Amtrak Service from DC to New York, Weather Break, and “Over turned Propane Truck in
Brookeville ( Breaking News).”

Where there reporter packages? Live shots? VOSOTS? What words were used on the “lower
third” fonts for those being interviewed
There weren’t any live shots, but there were quite a bit reporter packages that indeed did have
VOSOTS. The lower thirds had name of character being interviewed and a one-line description
of who they were. I briefly remember the WUSA9 logo as well in the lower thirds.
What did reporters say in their outcues?
The outcues that I did catch during the newscast were “Jericha Duncan, CBS News New York”
and “Darren Haynes, WUSA 9 Sports.”
