Standard: SC.5.E.5.2
Standard description: Recognize the major common characteristics of all planets and
compare/ contrast the properties of inner and outer planets.
Objective/Purpose:
The learner will…
Recognize the major common characteristics of all planets and compare/contrast the
properties of inner and outer planets.
Anticipatory Set (HOOK) Write a script as you plan to say it in a minute or less. A hook is not
instructions to the students or an explanation of the lesson plan, do not memorize, it is not a speech.
“I am the Sun”
“I am Mercury”
“I am Venus “
“I am Earth”
“I am Mars”
“I am Jupiter”
“I am Saturn”
“I am Uranus”
“I am Neptune”
“… and together we are the Solar System”
Description of visual aid, prop, or model or slide you will use in the set:
People will hold up the visual aids for their planet as they say the name and then the audience
can see what they look like to distinguish different physical features.
Required Materials for Lesson:
Doc cam, notebooks, computer for teacher presentation, computers/ Ipads for students,
playdough/ clay, poster sheets, markers, glue
1. Start off the lesson with a discussion on the solar system and the 8 Planets, Inner vs.
Outer, Closest and farthest, and Earths Location. Answers to the guided questions will
be written on the document camera, and students will be instructed to take notes in their
science notebooks.
2. On the same page, students will create a chart with 8 boxes, and label each one with
the planets in order, then watch a video on the planets in the solar system and add a
3. . Students will get in pairs and research properties about the inner and outer planets
and complete the planet research worksheet. The worksheet will then be glued into their
science notebooks. Each student will then receive another worksheet to glue in their
notebook that asks them to label each planet and they will complete it then glue it in
their notebook.
4. Students will work in groups to complete a model of the solar system using the
information they learned about the planets in class. It will be a 3D model using
playdough. They will break apart and work independently to create a small poster that
contains information about each planet: small illustration of each planet (they should
make the sizes of the illustrations in relation to the other planets), if it is inner/outer,
important characteristics of each planet or facts about the planet that make it unique,
5. The models will be displayed with the students posters and they will all walk around
the classroom to view the other group’s work. The class will then take part in another
discussion on the topics they have learned throughout the class, and will be asked to
state one fact that they found particularly interesting about the solar system/ planets.
Closure Statement: (is not necessarily an end point, but more of a final “check for
understanding” used at the end of a class period.)
The final discussion will be used to guide the end of class and once all students are
done with the discussion I will ask the students if there are any concepts they don’t
understand by asking them to give me a thumbs up if they think they could take a test
on all the planets right now, a sideways thumbs up if they understand but want to learn
more about some planets, and a thumbs down if they don’t understand and need more
information on most of the planets.
Assessment/Evaluation: (How will you know if students have mastered your objective? Must
state whether it is formative or summative.)
Summative: The student can choose a planet to focus on and create a separate 3D model of
and describe characteristics of what makes it an Inner/Outer planet and how it compares to the
other Inner/ Outer planets. They will be asked to present it to the class.
If they had an inner planet, they will then be asked to choose someone in the class with an
outer planet to compare characteristics and submit a T chart comparing facts of their planets.
Students with outer planets will do the same, but with a student who had an inner planet.
There will be a rubric used to grade the students understanding and thus far.

I used this lesson plan as an outline to guide me on creating mine but found different worksheets and
assignments on Pinterest to put into it to make it my own. I changed some things around so that it
would fit my classroom design better
