Learner Reaction:

The learners found the story very entertaining. They liked all of the creative pictures and they
thought some of the antics in the story were interesting. The students were also very opinionated so
they found the writing task at the end of the week fun to complete. They did not like some of the
partner talk topics, I had one class really enjoy talking about the text structure and my other class
just didn't quite get it this time around. Overall the students enjoyed the weeks lessons with about
80% having a positive reaction survey.

For day one about 80% of the students were able to successfully hit the success criteria on
the exit ticket. For day two on the question about text structure only about 50% of the class
successfully answered that question. This surprised me because of the conversation we had about
the differences on day two and on day one. About 75% of the students got part two correct on the
exit ticket. I found that for that section, the most common error was that the students were able to
come up with a question mom asked and a response Alex had, however, they were not related
questions and responses. This was again something we had talked about and verbally the students
were able to get down but written they were not as successful. On day 3 85% of the students were
successfully able to hit the success criteria. On day 4 again about 85% of the class was able to
successfully complete the pre write and essay in a clear and effective way. What was great to see
on the essays is that the students are getting a lot better at making it clear that it is their opinion not
an informational piece.

Evaluations for the perspective of the facilitator:

Day one was really great and the students were extremely engaged in the story and seemed
to really get a lot out of the text. Lesson two took a lot longer than I wanted it too and ideally should
just take one sitting instead of two. I also next time would like to do more partner talk as we go as
opposed to saving the partner talk till the end. After looking at the results I also think that during
lesson one I need to spend more time working on what is text structure because that was a lot
harder for the students then I anticipated and next time I will have more examples to help them
understand it.

I feel as if the materials were effective. I have finally been able to change the time that my
iPad screen goes dark. Over the course of the lesson that was one of the biggest issues is my
screen kept going black so it would disconnect from the apple TV and now that I have adjusted the
time it has been a lot better. I wish that my exit tickets could also be verbal on a few days. At our
school they say we have to have the writing component for every close reading but I think it would
be nice to vary it a little bit, especially for the learners that are better at showing mastery verbally I
think it would give them some more confidence. Also another material I need to change is my
handout for lesson 2. I was able to change it afterwards but during the lesson I had my pages
swapped so it was confusing to read with my first class. We had to skip the first chunk and go to the
second before coming back. Luckily I have that already changed for next year so I don’t have to
worry about the confusion.

Evaluation of the environment:

I think the teaching space was effective. If the class was able to handle it, I would love to
have pods so that they could have more group discussions. However, I have tried that with this class
and they have struggled not facing forward so I have had to adapt.

The biggest thing I need to change is adding a little more time for lesson two and figure out a
way to have partner talk throughout so I can get the whole lesson in one day. I feel like it would have
been more effective if it all took place together. I also have modified a few of the partner talk phrases
after implementing it just so that it makes more sense and is easier for the students to focus on the
topic.
