Typical and Atypical Development among Children

Early Childhood (3 to 8 Years)

Typical and Atypical Meaning

Typical defined as a normal progression by which children change as they grow older by
acquiring and refining knowledge, behaviours, and skills.

Atypical development is something unusual or when development doesn't follow the normal
course. It could include things like learning and social disabilities and disorders.

Key Terms
Early childhood is the most critical time for positive intervention. Children’s development
during this stage is strongly affected by their environment, and that effect continues to exert a
strong influence on the rest of their lives. It is a stage in human development, generally
includes toddlers and sometime afterwards.

Physical development is the process that starts in human infancy and continues into late
adolescent concentrating on gross and fine motor skills as well as puberty. Involves
developing control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination.

Social-Emotional development includes the child’s experience, expression, and

management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships
with others (Cohen and others 2005). It encompasses both intra- and interpersonal processes.

Language and Communication is the process by which children come to understand and
communicate language during early childhood.
Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out. It is the
development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children to
think about and understand the world around them. Brain development is part of cognitive
development.
