1.1 Introduction

The 6-Series consists of multi functional modular units. The 6-Series service manual is also
modular.
For adequate service of the 6-Series unit it is necessary to have access to all relevant service
documentation and a user manual.
It is also advised to refer to the Technical Reference Book (TRB) part number 1499.750. This
contains technical service information about functional testing, measuring and calibrating of
Enraf-Nonius units.

1.2 Description

The 6-Series has a modular design. Units can be adapted to the therapeutic needs of the user.
Therapeutic possibilities of the 6-Series depend on the configuration of the unit. The ”standard”
housing contains a power supply, the user interface and a colour LCD display. Adding treatment
specific application modules makes it possible to create a custom built unit.

Therapy modules for the 6-Series units:

Electro Therapy (ET) application module - Endomed module:

Module for application of Interferential, TENS,

Direct Current, High Voltage and Micro Current

Ultrasound (US) application module - Sonopuls module:

Module for application of Ultrasound therapy

Vacuum application module - Vacotron module:

Module for application of vacuum electrodes in

combination with an ET application module.

Future modules - Module(s) which will add other functionality to the

6-Series unit in future.

Technical specifications of the modules mentioned above are found in the user manual,
Part ref. nr. 1600.751.

Enraf-Nonius B.V. 6-Series - Service Manual - Part 1 1600.771-40

Block diagram of the 6-Series unit: (see figure 1-A)

Mains power supply:

The mains power required for the unit is supplied by an internal switching medical approved
power supply. The working range of this supply power is between 100 - 240 VAC / 50 - 60Hz,
this is sufficient to drive all configurations of the 6-Series unit.
For more details, see part 2 of this manual, reference number 1600.772.

User interface PC Board:

The user interface PC Board communicates between the application modules and all user
controls (ON/Standby switch, central parameter control and the parameter selection keys),
drives the colour LCD display and the cooling fan.
The user interface is driven by a “piggy back” micro processor module. This PC Board is
connected to the user interface PC Board at the component side by means of two connectors.
The user interface module is used in combination with a colour LCD display.
For more details, see part 2 of this manual, reference number 1600.772.

Colour LCD display:

The colour LCD display is connected to the user interface PC Board and displays the treatment
parameters and protocols. During transport the display is closed, it is also possible to change
the angle of the display for better visibility.
For more details, see part 2 of this manual, reference number 1600.772.

Quick reference / Trouble shooting 1-2 Release February 2006

Enraf-Nonius B.V. 6-Series - Service Manual - Part 1 1600.771-40

Unit Cooling fan:

The internal cooling fan does not operate under normal conditions, the housing is designed for
sufficient cooling. The fan inside the housing is controlled by the user interface and will only
work when the temperature inside the unit rises above 40oC. The rotation speed depends on
the PWM driver circuit which measures the temperature inside the housing. When the
temperature rises, the fan will rotate faster which gives a greater air flow through the housing.
For more details, see part 2 of this manual, reference number 1600.772.

Endomed - Electro therapy application module:

The Endomed electro therapy application module (also referred to as Endomed PC Board) is the
“standard” electro therapy module used with a 6-Series unit. It generates the Electro therapy
output currents as specified for the 6-Series unit.
The electro therapy module consists of a main ET PC Board, this generates AC-related therapy
current waveforms, and a “piggy back” PC Board which generates DC-related therapy current
waveforms.
For more details, see part 3 of this manual, reference number 1600.773.

Sonopuls - Ultrasound application module:

The Sonopuls ultrasound application module (also referred to as Sonopuls PC Board) can be
added to the 6-Series unit when ultrasound application is required. The ultrasound output can
be switched between continuous and pulsed output with a frequency of 1 or 3 MHz. The module
is used in combination with a multi-frequency treatment head which is specially designed for the
6-Series. Treatment heads are available with a treatment surface of 1 cm² and 5 cm².
For more details, see part 4 of this manual, reference number 1600.774.

Note Service, testing and repair of the multi-frequency Ultrasound treatment head(s) is
found in part 4 of this manual.

Vacotron - Vacuum application module:

The Vacotron vacuum application module consists of an internal vacuum pump unit and an
external vacuum distribution module. The vacuum pump unit is found inside the 6-Series unit
housing. This includes a vacuum pump and pressure sensing electronics to control the vacuum
pump. The separate vacuum distribution module is connected to the main 6-Series unit and is
placed under the 6-Series housing. It is used, in combination with the Endomed module, for
application of vacuum electrodes. The vacuum module itself does not generate therapy
currents, it supplies, in combination with the pump, the vacuum for the vacuum electrodes in
pulsed and continuous vacuum mode. The output current can be switched between the electro
therapy output connectors at the front of the 6-Series unit and the vacuum electrodes which are
connected at the front of the vacuum distribution module.
For more details, see part 5 of this manual, reference number 1600.775.

1.3 Application module identification / modification status / location

1.3.1 Application module identification

Module identification is possible via the ”System Settings” menu, option “System Info”.
The display shows the software part number of all installed application modules and the software
version of each module.
Each module (or PC Board) used with the 6-Series unit is identified by a self adhesive label. On
this label the reference number, spare part ordering number and the hardware modification
status are found.

Figure 1-B PC Board identification label.

Quick reference / Trouble shooting 1-3 Release February 2006

Enraf-Nonius B.V. 6-Series - Service Manual - Part 1 1600.771-40

1.3.2 Application module modification status

It is possible that the hardware of a module or PC Board is changed. When major changes are
made to a module, the reference number changes.
When minor changes are made a module the reference number remains unchanged. When a
hardware modification is made to a module, the modification status is also changed. This
modification can be made during production or, when requested in a service information sheet
(Service Info*), during a service call or in your workshop.
After the modification of a module/PC Board you will be requested to mark the modification
record on the identification label. In this way it is easy to check the hardware status.

* Service Info’s are additional technical information sheets which are related to the modules
in question.
A service info is identified by a prefix (SI) and the number of the manual (part) and a
sequential number.

For example the first additional service info of this part of the manual reads:

SI1600.771-4x - 01.

The 4x refers to the revision status of te part of the service manual (see the header at the
right top of this page).

Changing of the modification status of a PC Board or module

In a new software release it will be possible to change the modification status of a PC Board or
module. When this option is available the details will be explained in this chapter.

1.3.3 Application module location

The user interface module and related parts are found inside the top cover of the 6-Series unit.
On the bottom part (chassis) all application modules, the power supply unit (PSU) and a cooling
fan are found.

The application modules are mounted at positions which correspond with the front “slots”. For
details of the location of these slots see fig. 1-C.

The slot number indicates the location of the module on the mounting chassis of the unit, also

3.2 Description

The Electro therapy application module, the Endomed module, is located on the chassis (also
see fig. 1-C, part 1 of this service manual). The basic electro therapy module is used for two
channel Interferential therapy and TENS waveforms (referred to as Endomed AC PC Board).
The additional module, (referred to as Endomed DC PC Board) which is mounted on top of the
Endomed AC PC Board, adds direct currents, High voltage and micro current waveforms to the
unit.

The Electro therapy module is equipped with two output channels, one (internal) interconnection
for combination (Electro therapy and Ultrasound) therapy, a remote control connection and a
point electrode connection. At the bottom of the Endomed AC PC Board a connector is
mounted for connection of the electro therapy outputs to an additional vacuum module. This
module adds the possibility of application with vacuum electrodes.

Ref. nr. 1600.773

4.2 Description

The ultrasound therapy application module, Sonopuls module, is located on the chassis (also
see fig. 1-C, part 1 of this service manual). The ultrasound therapy module is used, in
combination with an ultrasound treatment head, for application of ultrasound therapy. When
combining with an electro therapy module (Endomed module) it is possible to apply combination
therapy (electro- and ultrasound) in one treatment.

Treatment heads

The Multi frequency UltraSound (MUS) treatment head consists of a crystal which is cemented
to the treatment surface and which converts the electrical signal from the Sonopuls module into
a mechanical vibration (i.e. the ultrasound signal).

Ultrasound application module (Sonopuls) 4-1 Release February 2006

Enraf-Nonius B.V. 6-Series - Service Manual - Part 4 1600.774-40

The “standard” treatment head for the 600-series unit has a 5 cm² (large) treatment surface, and
is used for both 1 MHz and 3.1 MHz.
The optional treatment head has a 0.8 cm² (small) treatment surface, and is also used for both
1 MHz and 3.1 MHz. Both types of treatment heads are suitable for sub-aqual treatments and
equipped with contact control indicators.

The multi frequency treatment heads can be used with every 600-series unit equipped with a
Sonopuls module unit without any necessary circuit adjustment. Calibrated measuring circuits in
the Sonopuls module and inside the treatment head ensure that the electrical characteristics of
each treatment head matches with every 600-series Sonopuls module.

4.3 Module identification / location

4.3.1 Module identification

Module identification is possible via the ”System Settings” menu, option “System Info”. The
application software version of all installed modules is shown on the display. An application
module or PC Board used with the 6-Series unit is also identified by a self adhesive label. On
this label the reference number, spare part ordering number and the hardware modification
status can be found.

Note For details see part 1 of this modular service manual, chapter 1.3 and 1.4.

4.3.2 Module location

Figure 4-A shows the location of the Ultrasound therapy module found on the chassis of the unit.

Figure 4-A Location of the ultrasound module.

4.4 Quick reference / selftest / functional test / standard module tests

4.4.1 Test tools

For testing of the Ultrasound therapy module (Sonopuls PC Board) and Ultrasound treatment
head the following special tools are required:

- Ultrasound dummy load with adaptor ring, part number 1417.802, see fig. 4-B
- Digital multimeter - (DMM) 4 digits, accuracy 1%)

For extended functional testing (only performed when the unit generates an error code or does
not function correct):

- Two channel oscilloscope or digital scope-meter

Ultrasound application module (Sonopuls) 4-2 Release February 2006

Enraf-Nonius B.V. 6-Series - Service Manual - Part 4 1600.774-40

Software versions / revision status:

Before performing the functional test it is advised to check the software versions and the
modification status of the modules. Update the software (see the Enraf-Nonius Partner-site for
the latest version) if required. Also check the internet site for prescribed modifications to the
application modules (PC Boards) of the unit.

Note When a modification is made to a module / PC Board, the modification status must
be changed if requested. See par. 4.7.6 for changing of the modification status.

4.4.2 Selftest:

A detailed description of the selftest is found at par. 1.5 of the Quick reference / Trouble
shooting part of this service manual. Part number of part 1 of the 6-Series service manual is
1600.771

It is assumed that when the selftest sequence is passed all functions of the 6-Series are OK.
If the unit does not switch on or does not enter the user mode, see the trouble shooting and
error code lists.

4.4.3 Functional test

Before functional testing of the Ultrasound module, connect the unit to the mains and wait until
the indication at the bottom of the display lights yellow.
Press the ON switch and wait until the indication lights green and the unit enters the user mode.
The unit starts with the “Home” page.

For checking of the ultrasound output power an ultrasound dummy load, part number 1417.802
(also see fig. 4-B) is required.

4.4.4 Standard module tests:

Note The ultrasound dummy load (power gauge) is only used as an optimum acoustical
load for ultrasound frequencies and can not be used as an output power meter.
The measuring system is not accurate enough to use it as an output power meter, it
gives an indication of the output power.

Note The ultrasound dummy load must be filled with degassed water. Boil the water for
approx. 15 minutes. Wait for the water to cool down to room temperature (± 20 °C)
before use.

4.4.5 Output power check channel A (Ultrasound treatment head 5 cm 2):

Service Information

6-Series, Ultrasound application module, Error codes 388 through 391

When the 6-Series unit is switched on, the unit performs a selftest. During this test electronic circuits
on all available application modules are tested for proper functioning.
Recently is discovered that some 6-Series units generate an errorcode when switching on the unit.

Symptom:

The unit displays an errorcode which can be either 388, 389, 390 or 391.
The errorcode which is displayed is generated during the selftest of the ultrasound application module.
During this selftest signals are generated to check the output stage for proper functioning.

Caused by:

Due to an insufficient insulation layer on some PC Boards, two solder pads at the back the PC Board
could short circuit via the heatsink which is mounted to the chassis of the unit.
The selftest detects testing values which are out of range because of these short circuited
connections.

Solution to this problem:

This problem can be solved by insulating these solder pads by means of self adhesive insulation
material. A small piece of self adhesive tape with size of approx. 1 x 2.5 cm. is sufficient and can be
added to the bottom of the PC Board, see the detailed pictures at the back of this page.

After modifying the unit please mark modification record No. 1 on the identification label on the PC
Board.

For details about opening of the housing and removal and mounting of the ultrasound PC Board see
page 3 and 4 of the service information sheet.

Please add this service info to appendix C of your 6-Series Ultrasound module service manual, part
number 1600.775-40.

Service Information

6-Series, Ultrasound application module, Error code 391

When the 6-Series unit is switched on, the unit performs a selftest. During this test electronic circuits
on all available application modules are tested for proper functioning.
Recently it was discovered that some Sonopuls 692 units generate error code 391 when switching on
the unit.

Symptom:

The unit displays error code 391 after switching on.

The errorcode which is displayed is generated during the selftest of the ultrasound application module.
During this selftest signals are generated to check the output stage for proper functioning.
Also, see service information sheet No: SI 1600.775-40 - 01 for other selftest error codes.

Caused by:

During production choke L3 (see fig. 1) is mounted with an angle of approx. 450 to fit into the metal
EMC shielding box. With some Ultrasound application modules this choke is mounted with
mechanical force. This may cause electrical contact between the choke and the shielding box.

Solution to this problem:

This problem can be solved by insulating the surface as shown at fig. 3 by means of self adhesive
insulation tape. A small piece of self adhesive tape with size of approx. 2.5 x 3 cm. is sufficient and
can be added to the inner side of the shielding box. It is also advised to put a piece of adhesive tape
with size of approx. 2.5 x 5 cm. at the front of the shielding box.
See the back of this page for detailed instructions and pictures.

After modifying the shielding box please mark modification record No. 3 on the identification label on

5.2 Description

The Vacuum application module, the Vacotron module, is divided into two parts:
- Vacuum pump module, located on the chassis (also see fig. 1-C, part 1 of
this service manual)
- Vacuum distribution unit, separate unit placed under the 6-Series unit.
The basic electro therapy module (Endomed module) is used for two channel Interferential
therapy and TENS waveforms. The additional vacuum application module adds the possibility of
application with vacuum electrodes. At the bottom of the 6-Series unit (when equipped with an
Electro therapy module) a connector is mounted for connection of the electro therapy outputs to
the vacuum distribution module. The vacuum module supplies the vacuum required for the
vacuum electrodes, it does not generate Electro therapy signals. See fig. 5-A, 6-Series unit with
the vacuum module.
