How Many Ligers

Exist in the World?
All the ligers in the world are living in captivity. None
of these ligers live in the wild. Ligers are a result of a
cross breeding program in between a male lion and
female tiger. Since all of these ligers are living in
captivity, it can be highly easier to evaluate exactly
how many ligers exist in the world. However, there are
some conflicting reports about the exact numbers of
ligers.

According to the most recent reports e.g. Xinhua news

agency China, there are only 8 ligers in the world. But
this is not true at all. One report in 2008, published in
the Daily sun stated that there are nearly 100 ligers
living in the world. Normally, all the news agencies
and even the animal welfare organization says that the
numbers of ligers living in the world are around 20 to
30. Which report should we trust then?
Ligerworld.com has conducted a survey and found that
the exact numbers of ligers are near to 100.
Alone in United States, there are about 30 ligers
in the world. In China, there are about 20 ligers
living there. These two countries make up
around 50 ligers. Russia, Korea, Germany,
England, Italy, South Africa and France all have
more than 2 ligers each in their zoos. A graph

Ligers have a very rich history. At least they are
almost 2 centuries old in terms of their historical
records. The data indicates that the first liger ever
born in the world was during 1824. All of these
ligers were the parts of the intentional breeding
programs. The experimenters just wanted to check
about different possibilities. The result came in the
form of ligers and it would have satisfied them to
a certain extent.
The reports also indicated that the first liger in the
world was born in India. Ligers are not born in the
wild. The liger which was born in 1799 in India
had its painting as well. Therefore, the painting
evidence indicates that first ever liger offspring
occurred in the sub-continent soil which currently
include Pakistan and India.

This would also indicate the fact that this would
have happened under the ruling of the British in
India. It is not possible because of the basic fact
that tigers and lions have never shared any
territory in the world. At least it indicates that
the concept was there and people were actually
aware of the fact that what would result from a
cross breeding of the lions and the tigers.
From the 1700s, the event of 1799 was the most
notable. Apart from that all the rest of the
historical traces about the ligers were well
established in the 1800s. Therefore, 19th century
could be considered as the hallmark for the
historical evolution of the ligers on earth.
 DID LIGERS EVER
EXIST IN THE WILD?
It is unlikely to observe lions and tigers living and
hunting together at same plains. Tigers live in dense
jungles while lions in open plains. Most of the lions
in the world are in Africa. Africa has the largest
population of the lions. Similarly, most of the biggest
population of the tigers resides in Asia and in the
Siberian region of Russia. There is hardly a chance
that these two cats mate in the wild and produce their
off-springs as ligers. Is there ever a place where there
is a chance a tiger and lion can encounter?
The answer exists within a place named as Gir in
India. This is a place, where the tigers’ and lions’
territories are specifically overlapped. Therefore, in
finding the wild ligers, the best chance can be to find
it in that place. But there is no evidence of ligers
there. However, people do have stories that ligers
use to roam in these areas, hundreds of years ago.
But there has been no real evidence of it. Therefore,
a forensic evidence research is needed to explore it
requiring a massive budget.
Skeletons of big cats have been founds which
are believed to be as big as ligers. The Great
American Lions and Saber Toothed Tigers are
very common examples. They also weighed
more than 1000 pounds. One school of thought
suggests that it is highly possible that one of
the species might would have been ligers and
ligers did have existed millions of years ago.

 SPEED OF THE
LIGERS
There are conflicting reports about the speed of the ligers. But this even these
conflicting evidences confirm that ligers are capable of speeding from 40 to 50
miles per hour. A liger expert Dr. Bhagavan Antle, who has an experience of
more numbers of ligers including world’s famous liger Hercules, says that
ligers capable of speeding up to 50 miles per hour. He says that despite having
huge body, the overall body structure of the liger is built to support the weight
and speed of the ligers. Ligers are very fast. Even tigers are as fast as 50 miles
per hour.

However, Dr. Antle has once also stated that one of his liger named as Samson
was capable of running 60 miles per hour. This is a very fast speed for a liger.
If this speed is correct, this can make the liger the second fastest mammal on

Ligers are the hybrids of male lions and female tigers.
Lions possess big manes which help them as a guard
against any aggression of other predator usually
another big lion in the wild. Tigers do not have that
shield. They do have small puffs around their head.
Since manes are absent and present with a ratio of
tiger mother and lion father, therefore, theoretically it
is highly possible that their offspring ligers may or
may not have manes.
According to the research project of the
ligerworld.com, it has been concluded from the
evidence of the pictures and from the advice of the
experts that some ligers have manes, while others do
not have them at all. It should also be noted that just
like male lions only the male ligers have manes, while
there was no evidence about the mane’s presence
among female ligers.
Another important finding is that some male ligers do
not develop manes early on in their lives. But they
may develop mane at the later stages of their lives.
Even most importantly, the manes of the ligers are not
that much heavier as that of the African lions. The
manes of the ligers look more well groomed as
compared to the African lions who have bushy kind of
manes.
In the picture below are the two different ligers. Both
are the male ligers but one liger has a mane while the
other liger does not have a mane. Even most
importantly, the liger on the left side is younger and
lives in China in Habrin. The liger on the right side
has no mane at all. Even the world’s famous male
liger Hercules does not have the mane. His trainer Dr.
Antle stated that he might develop it after some years
when he will be more than 7 years old.
