Mathematics Stage 5 – Surface Area and Volume Excel Calculator

Outcomes Assessed
MA5.1-2WM - selects and uses appropriate strategies to solve problems
MA5.1-8MG - calculates the areas of composite shapes, and the surface areas of rectangular
and triangular prisms
MA5.2-11MG - calculates the surface areas of right prisms, cylinders and related composite
solids
MA5.2-12MG - applies formulas to calculate the volumes of composite solids composed of
right prisms and cylinders
MA5.3-13MG - applies formulas to find the surface areas of right pyramids, right cones,
spheres and related composite solids
MA5.3-14MG - applies formulas to find the volumes of right pyramids, right cones, spheres
and related composite solids

Task
To create an excel spreadsheets to calculate the surface area and volume of the following
solids give length, breadth and height etc.
ALL calculations must use Excel formulas

On separate Excel sheets you must create a calculator that will calculate the surface are and
volume of the following solids, a

5.1
 cube,
 rectangular prism,
 triangular prism with a right angled triangle as its base only (Note: you will need base
and height measurements of the triangle, AND you will need to use Pythagoras
Theorem to calculate the hypotenuse, as it is needed for the surface area)

Label your three Excel sheets: cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism

5.2
 triangular prism (Note: as above)
 open cylinder
 a closed cylinder

Label your three Excel sheets: triangular prism, open cylinder, closed cylinder

5.3
 pyramid given a slant height
 cone given the perpendicular height

Label your two Excel sheets: pyramid, cone.

See below a very simple layout for area and perimeter of a square
Area and Perimeter of a square

Type in your side length here 8

and the unit here cm

Its area is 64 square cm

Its perimeter is 32 cm

NOTE: Check your answers carefully using examples from your textbook, as spreadsheet
calculators that do not work will not be awarded marks for being ‘close’.
