HISTORY OF BIÑAN

SECONDARY SCHOOL OF
APPLIED ACADEMICS
Biñan Secondary School of Applied Academics
Sto. Tomas, Biñan, Laguna

History of the School


The school started its operation on June 5, 2000 as Annex of
Biñan National High School occupying a building at Biñan
Elementary School with the permission of Ms. Romana L.
Espinosa, District Supervisor, for the reason that all the
students will be accommodated who were no longer accepted
at Jacobo Z. Gonzales School of Arts and Trade and Biñan
National High School, the only two public secondary schools in
town at that time. The school had 330 students, with three (3)
sections in first year and four (4) sections in second year
handled by 4 (four) teachers from the Local School Board and
another four (4) from Provincial School Board.

By virtue of Sangguniang Barangay Resolution of Sto. Tomas


headed by Chairman Restituto Manarin, which aimed to address
the problem of numerous elementary graduates from the
outlying barrios can be accommodated with less expense going
to the town proper, the local government acquired a parcel of
land through Deed of Sale in year 2000 to relocate the Biñan
NHS Annex to Brgy. Sto. Tomas and at the same time the
students from outlying barrios can also be accommodated. With
the joint effort of former Gov. Joey Lina., Mayor Hermis C. Perez
and Ms. Romana L. Espinosa, two (2) buildings with 6 (six)
classrooms were constructed.

On June 2001, the school buildings were successfully built


and the students were transferred to the new site. Dr. Edelmira
M. Libas, Schools Division Superintendent then, appointed Mr.
Bayani V. Enriquez, Master Teacher I from Binan NHS (Main) to
be the Teacher Leader. The instruction to 813 enrollees from 1st
year to 3rd year were facilitated by the twelve (12) teachers in
the school. Supervision was done collaboratively by Dr. Teresita
M. Dela Cruz, School Principal, and Ms. Roman L. Espinosa,
District Supervisor. Textbooks and other instructional materials
were provided by the mother school and the local school board.
In November, of the same year, the covered court and stage
were constructed through the initiative of Hon. Gov. Teresita
“Ningning” Lazaro.

In the school year 2002 – 2003, the Applied Academic


Approach was introduced to the incoming first year students.
Due to the increased in enrolment from 813 to 1,121 another
building with six classrooms was constructed through the effort
of Mayor Hermis C. Perez.

In 2003, a three-storey building with nine classrooms with


Science, Math and Computer laboratories was built. The said
building is occupied by 6 sections of 1st Year students. The three
laboratories were being used by all levels to perform their
activities, experiments and research works. The school now
has a total of thirty (33) teachers, (31) having national item and
twenty four (2) having local school board item. Textbooks and
instructional materials were sufficiently allocated by DepEd
Division of Laguna and the local school board. On May 19, 2003,
a Sangguniang Bayan Resolution No. 136 approved the
separation of the school from its mother school and renaming it
as “Biñan Secondary School of Applied Academics”.

Year 2004 up to present, the school continuously


strengthening its partnership with LGU, Industries and NGO’s
such as TOSHIBA Information Equipment Phils. Inc., Amkor
Phils., Biñan Medical Society and the PTCA. The school
solicitated wood pallets, foams and other reusable materials
from Toshiba for TLE ( Technology and Livelihood Education)
projects and developing their skills in wood works and work
ethics as well. They (Toshiba) also provided training to teachers
on waste management. Amkor Phils. assisted the school
through donating internet access cards for those students who
want to use internets in connecting to websites to upgrade their
knowledge and preparing themselves for the information
technology that be use in taking college entrance tests.
Scholarships and educational assistance were also granted by
Biñan Medical Society and LGU to deserving students who
want to pursue tertiary or vocational education. PTCA (Parent,
Teachers, Community Association) supports strongly the
school projects and activities for students’ development and
improvement of school facilities. SM Foundation, Toshiba
Information Equipment Phils. Inc. and some private individuals
donated books to the school library as reference materials for
the students.

Year 2005, Mr. Enriquez submitted to the Division Office the


papers and pertinent documents requesting for the separation
of Biñan National High School- Sto. Tomas Extension, Barangay
Sto.Tomas, Biñan, Laguna to its mother school - Binan National
High School main.

December 09, 2005 recommendation of the Schools Division


Superintendent Lilia T. Reyes was forwarded to the Regional
Director, Department of Education, Regional Office No.IV, Pasig
City, together with the supporting papers.

January 24, 2006 the request to separate the school was


approved by George R. Garma, CESO III – Director IV of Region
IV-A CALABARZON for having complied with the requirements
as per DECS Order NO.5, s.1989, but with the condition that the
additional financial requirements of the school shall continue to
be supported by the local government until such time when the
same shall be included in the national budget..

June 05, 2006 during the opening of classes, a simple


ceremony was held in the school covered court to officially
launch the new name of the school from Biñan National High
School annex to BIÑAN SECONDARY SCHOOL OF APPLIED
ACADEMICS. The old uniform for girls, which was then colored
green skirt and white blouse, and white polo and khaki pants for
boys is now replaced. Checkered skirt, white blouse, ribbon
lace, and patch for the girls; white polo with collar, school patch,
and navy blue pants for the boys. The school has also come up
with a logo which is shown in the school patch.
