Activity Sheet No.

Woodcraft and Bamboo Enhancing Techniques


(Discusses the importance and methods of enhancing/decorating bamboo, wood, and metal products-TLE6IA-0a-1)

Pre-Activity :

Prepare the following materials:

 Techniques written in metacards (8)


 Definition of techniques written on metacards (8)
 Music player, masking tape, & whiteboard
 Plastic bowl for the metacards; whole or cut

If the group size/number of learners exceeds the total number metacards (16)
the Facilitator can opt to cut some or all the metacards into two (2) or three (3) parts,
either a technique or a definition to prepare for the expected number of learners in
his class.

Activity – Pair and Share

Mechanics:

 Play the music.


 While the music is being played, instruct the learners to dance with the music.
 While dancing, let each learner get one (1) metacard from the bowl and try to find
their pair. (technique or definition)
 After finding their partners, let them post it on the whiteboard, showing either
completed name of technique or definition.
 After everybody had posted their metacards, ask them to settle down.

Ask: 1. What do you think these words represent ? (Let them distinguised the techniques
from the definitions)
2. What do you think these words are called ?

Ask for some volunteers who will try to match a technique to a definition. (the
whole class will basically form eight (8) pairs of techniques and definition). Validate
the correctness of pairing, and the later discuss each technique with your class.

Note: Below are the various techniques and their definitions in enhancing the quality
and decorating bamboo and wood products to be used for the activity.

1. This is a process of using a lathe to make various forms and shapes of wood.
(Woodturning)
2. It is considered a wood craft using a sharp object to create designs on the
wood. (Handcarving)
3. This is considered an art using fire or heat to decorate wood or leather.
(Pyrography)
4. It is a technique that lines the interior of drawers and boxes with a soft
velvety finish. (Flocking)
5. This is done to color wood and give it the illusion of texture.(Staining)
6. It is a process which combines several techniques that involve inserting pieces
into a base object to incorporate new designs on the original product.
(Inlaying)
7. It is considered a decorative technique in which powder is applied on wood
or other materials to give a thin coating of gold. (Gilding)
8. This is considered the simplest way of decorating wood since there is a
variety of colors that you can choose from. (Painting)

Metal Craft Enhancing Techniques

Pre-Activity :

Prepare the following:

 Four (4) separate envelopes, each containing all six (6) techniques in jumbled
letters together with the corresponding six (6) picture puzzle of each technique.
 Four (4) permamnet markers, masking tape, and small tokens (as prizes)
 Four (4) brown papers containing the matrix below:

Activity – Puzzle

Mechanics:

 Give each group a permanent marker, brown paper and an envelop (w/ set of jumbled
letters techniques and picture puzzle).
 In 5 minutes, let them assemble the jumbled letters and picture puzzle, they will present
their output using the matrix given above. Each column should contain a technique, on
the upper row, and the picture on the lower row.
 After the presentations, each group will write down (directly below the picture) as many
words that they can think/form from all the six (6) techniques. After two (2) minutes, the
group who have written the most number of words will be declared as the winner.
Note: Below are the six (6) pictures showing techniques in enhancing the quality and
decorating metal crafts to be used for this activity. (Pictures sizes should be enlarged
for activity use)

Importance of Enhancing/Decorating Bamboo, Wood and Metal Products

Pre-Activity:

Prepare the following:

 Three (3) permanent markers, masking tape, and copy paper


 Three (3) questions, written separately on a brown paper related to the
importance of knowing the various techniques in enhancing bamboo, wood and
metal crafts and the business behind it.

Sample Questions:

1. Do you think Filipinos are capable of establishing a bamboo, wood and


metal craft business in our country, or even internationally ? Why do you
think so ?
Expected: Filipinos are talented and skillful craftsmen

2. What do you think are the major factors to be considered by our Artisans if
they want to start or their businesses to stay and progress ?
Expected: Knowledge on the crafts business and possible product
enhancements

3. What makes our existing products in-demand both in local and international
markets ?
Expected: Unique designs and quality of work; we know what the
market want

Activity – Learning Stations

Mechanics:

 Post each question on different designated sides/walls of the room. (Make sure the
questions are covered before the actual discussion of the groups starts)
 Break the whole class into three (3) sub-groups.
 Give each group a copy paper where to write their answer
 Assign each group to a specific question/sides of the room.
 Give each group three (3) minutes to brainstorm on the 1st question assigned to
them. They should write their answers on the copy paper provided to them
 Each group will move to the next 2 questions, answer it accordingly within the given
time limit.
 Ask the group to go back to their places, consolidate and summarize their responses
on three (3) questions.
 Read each question, and let the group share their responses through a
representative.

Pre-Activity:

Prior to this activity, the Facilitator should have given the assignment to each group to
identify exisiting wood or metal products in their homes to be used for the actual activity.

Activity – Possible Enhancements on a Product

A. Let each group discuss the possible enhancements that can be done on the product that
they have decided to bring into the class. Accomplish the matrix below and present it to
the class:

Enhancing Wood or Metal Products


(Demostrate creativity and innovativeness in enhancing/decorating bamboo, wood, and metal products (TLE6IA-0a-2)

A. Using the matrix 1, let each group discuss with the class their enhancement plan,
especially if they have altered or made some changes on their original plan.

B. After the each group’s presentation, let them do the enhancement activity. Remind them
that the activity should be finished within 10 – 15 minutes.

C. After the enhancement activity, let each group present their final output vs their original
plan.

D. Let each other group rate the output of the other group using the Matrix 2 (below is just
a sample rubric).
