NON-COMPACT AND SLENDER
FLANGES

Advanced Beam – Non-Compact and Slender Sections – AISC Manual 14th Ed 2

 The following slides assume:
 Doubly symmetric members
 I Shape
 Major axis bending
 Non-compact or slender FLANGE

Advanced Beam – Non-Compact and Slender Sections – AISC Manual 14th Ed 3

Non-Compact and Slender Flange

Lateral torsional buckling is not affected by flange local buckling

It is assumed that FLB and LTB can be checked independently.

LTB: Refer to slides for compact sections.

FLB: Refer to the following slides.

The strength is the lowest result from possible failure modes.

Non-Compact and Slender Web

A slender web is likely to experience some buckling under flexural

loading. When the web buckles, additional flexural strength is still
possible from the non-buckled portions of the cross-section. This
affects the failure modes as follows.

LTB: effective section is reduced due to buckled portion of the web.

FLB: web restraint of the compression flange may be reduced.

The strength is the lowest result from possible failure modes.

Compression and Tension Flange Yielding
(equivalent to reaching maximum moment)

Compression:
Mn = RpgFySxc Equation F5-1

Tension:
Mn = FySxt Equation F5-10

Note that these state the basis for maximum attainable moment to
be My rather than Mp as used for compact sections.
