CTAE Districtwide CTAE Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes
November 14, 2019

The NCSS Districtwide CTAE Advisory Committee meeting was held Thursday,
November 14th at 1:30 p.m. at NCCA. The meeting was called to order by NCSS
YAP/WBL Coordinator Debra Lary. Advisory Committee members were asked to
complete the business partner form which will identify the ways in which businesses
would like to partner for the current school year. Members were encouraged to let the
NCSS team know how they can be of help to advisory members.
NCSS CTAE Director Dr. Tim Schmitt gave an overview of YouScience which is
currently being piloted at Eastside High School. YouScience is an online career and
personal planning assessment used to determine student aptitude. YouScience will
eventually be rolled out to all high schools. He gave an overview of the Connect Newton
Externship Program and asked businesses who would like to participate this summer to
contact him. The goal is to have educators from all 23 Newton County Schools
participate with the potential of having 23 to 30 educator slots. The externship program
gives educators the opportunity to learn about local business and industries and to
share these experiences with their students.
Perkins V was reviewed and discussed by Dr. Schmitt. Dr. Schmitt asked members to
look for more information coming from him in the near future. Input from business and
industry partners will be needed for the new Perkins V initiative.
Debra Lary discussed a new Summer Student Externship Program that is planned to be
kicked off this summer. It will be modeled after Piedmont Newton Hospital’s Summer
Junior Volunteer Program that currently enrolls NCSS healthcare students. Nisshinbo
has signed on to participate and members were asked to contact Debra if they would
like to sponsor a student(s) this summer for an externship.
Tyshema Mitchell gave updates and highlights of achievements and accomplishments
of NCSS WBL students. Chris Newsham gave an overview of the German
Apprenticeship Program. NCSS currently has 13 total apprentices with four new
apprentices at Michelin, General Mills and FiberVisions. Recruiting of new apprentices
for the 2020 -2021 school year will begin soon. Companies interested in participating
are asked to contact Dr. Tim Schmitt or Debra Lary.
Chris Newsham gave an update on the NCSS CTI Programs. The numbers continue to
grow of CTI students at each high school. Companies who would like more information
about the CTI Program are asked to contact Chris Newsham. Alisa Echols invited
members to the NCSS Districtwide CTAE Student of the Year Awards Ceremony
Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Porter Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. Advisory Committee
business member Nisshinbo was recognized as being named the 2019 Georgia WBL
NE Region Business Partner of the Year. All businesses were thanked for their
collaboration and contributions to Newton County Schools.
Student Advisory Committee members Madison Graham from Alcovy and Dylan
Alarcon from NCCA spoke about their participation in the Work-Based Learning
Program and how it has helped them academically and with their career goals. NCCA’s
Business Department is going through recertification of their program. Business
members were asked to complete a survey so that the business department can gather
data needed for recertification. The next Advisory Committee meeting will be March 24,
2020 at 9:30 a.m. at NCCA. The meeting was adjourned.
