 INTRODUCTION

The Social Work Department of Christ University organized the Rural


Camp- RUPANTHARA, which provided an opportunity and helped the
Social Work Trainees to gain practical skills and be exposed to the rural
areas.
The students of MSW CCP (2019-2021), 1st semester were required to
go for the Rural camp at Jamkhandi, Karnataka. The rural camp was held
from 22nd September 2019 to 28th September 2019.
The rural camp is designed for Social Work Trainees to introduce
them with the living experience of rural community and to practice and
integrate social work with their personal and societal expectations. The rural
camp is helpful in inculcating various skills such as organizing, problem
solving, decision making, leadership etc and knowledge of practical field
work.

 ABOUT THE CAMP

The Rural Camp- Rupanthara, was designed to increase knowledge


and skill in social work practice with groups and communities.
The rural camp consists of 57 students of MSW CCP and it was
divided into 8 committees to look after different aspects of the rural camp. 57
students were divided into 2 Teams. In 1 day, both team visits different
villages and conducted several activities such as: Street Play, Drama,
Dandiya dance, Patriotic song, Games with children. As a part of CSA
Project named UNNATI SHA, the social work trainees went to 4 villages of
Jamkhandi, i.e., Sanal, Aalgur, Naagnur, Chikka Pada Salagi.
UNNATI SHA (Self Help Approach) project by CSA provides
training to SHG (Self Help Group) workers that helps them in their
empowerment through economic and social means. The project follows 5
Modules. In the 1st Module, CSA workers shows a chart paper consisting of
three emotions: happy, sad and confused to the SHG women and asks them to
select their current situation. The 2nd Module helps the SHG workers to
realise about their problem and its solution and also makes them realise that
they are the only one to overcome with the problem. The 3rd Module helps
the women realise that everyone has obstacles in their life, but it depends how
they use the resources to come out of the problem. The 4th Module talks
about. The 5th Module provides training on Gender Sensitization. Therefore,
through different Modules, CSA provides training to SHG workers to
empower and help them to overcome the economic crisis in their family.
The social work trainee visited 2 villages, Sanal and Chikka Pada
Salagi, as a part of CSA project and got ample of opportunities to improve
her interpersonal relationship skills through group activities conducted in the
villages of Jamkhandi.
6 days of rural camp focused on: women empowerment, awareness
about toilet usage, maintenance of hygiene, conducted street play on swacch
bharat and drama on child marriage, dandiya dance, patriotic song, games
with children, all these activities helped the social work trainee to learn about
rural living.
The camp helped the social work trainee to learn about the ground
realities of rural areas and rural living. Thus, the rural camp is a good
platform to learn new skills and work as a team.

 OBJECTIVES OF THR RURAL CAMP


1. To understand community social system.
2. To get exposure to rural areas and rural lifestyle.
3. To understand the ground realities of community living.
4. To experience group living and learn to adjust with fellow social work
trainees.
5. To analyse the approaches and strategies of intervention used by Centre
for Social Action in Christ (deemed to be university) or Government or
any other organization in the community.
6. To conduct interaction and awareness programs in the schools and villages
of the community.
7. To conduct cultural program in the community.
8. To learn team building and team work.

 PROPOSED TASKS
1. Social Analysis- Impact Assessment of CSA Project.
2. Organizing cultural programs for the community.
3. Awareness about health and hygiene.
4. Painting Anganwadi.

 METHODOLOGY USED FOR CONDUCTING THE TASKS


1. Household Survey.
2. Cultural activities i.e. street play, drama, dandiya dance, songs.
3. Games with children
4. Interaction with village communities, beneficiaries of CSA Project.
5. Observation
6. Interaction with villagers helped in getting the information from where to
get paint and brushes.

1. Travel Committee
The travel committee was responsible for booking tickets of train from
Banglore to Bagalkote on 21.09.2019 and from Bagalkote to Banglore
on 28.09.2019. All the internal transportation for 57 students with the
faculty member was arranged by travel committee which included: A
bus was booked by travel committee from Bagalkote to Jamkhandi on
22.09.2019 and from Jamkhandi to Bagalkote on 28.09.2019 and also
travel from Jamkhandi to different villages such as- Sanal, Aalgur,
Naagnur and Chikka Pada Salagi was taken care by travel committee.
All the social work trainees were cooperative throughout the camp.

2. Finance Committee
The finance committee was responsible for preparing the budget plan for
the entire week of rural camp. The committee asked each core
committee members to send their required budget, according to that the
final budget plan was made. All the expenses such as: booking of train,
bus, auto, food expenses, water can expense, first aid expense, were
taken care by finance committee.

3. Discipline Committee
The discipline committee was responsible for maintaining safety of
social work trainees during stay and travel, encourage punctuality of
everyone and keeping up of tasks assigned, maintaining order during the
field work, maintain hygienic and clean environment at the campsite as
well as in the community, ensure cleanliness of places of common usage
such as toilets, hall, kitchen and eating area.
The discipline committee prepared the list of Do’s and Don’ts and the
social work trainees were oriented about the same. The committee was
responsible for maintaining proper time schedule.

4. Well-Being Committee
The well-Being Committee was responsible for providing health related
facilities to the social work trainees who suffered from health problems
such as stomach ache, dehydration, fever, dizziness- medicines were
provided to the social work trainees as well to faculty who was not well,
to help them come out of their problems.

5. Program Committee
The program committee was responsible for organizing throughout
plans for the camp which included: daily plan from getting up at 5:30am
for Yoga and exercises till going to bed at 10:30pm, activities that are
going to be conduct on the villages. The committee could organize the
program and co-ordinate with other committee members in the day’s
activity and also carefully managing and coordinating with others about
the last-minute changes in the programs.

6. Food Committee
The food committee was responsible to prepare breakfast in the morning
and serve at 7:30 am, daily different committee members helped the
food committee in the preparation of breakfast according to the groups
made. The lunch was prepared by SHG workers and given in the
villages to the social work trainees at 2:00 pm. The dinner was prepared
by 5 SHG workers and other committee members help the food
committee according to their daily rotation wise to serve dinner at 8:00
pm.

7. Cultural Committee
The cultural committee was responsible for planning the events that would
benefit the community people, carefully keeping in mind the likes and
dislikes of the community. The events were planned by the community
such as conducting awareness information program, street play, drama on
child marriage, planting saplings throughout the villages, cultural
activities such as : Dandiya dance, patriotic song singing.
The cultural committee planned camp fire for the social work trainees in
which few of the student trainees shared their experiences about the rural
camp and thanked everyone for cooperating with everyone despite of
challenges faced.

8. Documentation Committee
The Documentation Committee was consisted of 5 members. The
documentation team on its 7 days of rural camp made sure to document
everything and take pictures of all the programs and events that took
place in the villages as well as the place of stay.
The documentation team pen down each activity of the day in the form of
report to track the daily records of participation of each social work
trainee in various activities conducted in the villages. The team worked
hard in maintaining the proper record of everything.

 GROUPS MADE FOR THE CAMP


 Two groups were made to cover 2 villages at Jamkhandi on one single
day and conduct various cultural programs, street play, drama and
awareness information for the effective execution of rural camp.

 06 groups were made for cleaning the place of stay for each day and
the social work trainees cooperated and maintained cleanliness and
hygiene at the place:

 For 6 days , 8 committees were assigned to help the food committee in


preparing the breakfast, all the committee members cooperated with
the food committee and prepared the breakfast on time, i.e., 7:30 am.

Therefore, different groups were made to understand the rural camp


through various aspects, help and cooperate with each other, understand
group living, learn various skills and learn to organize and plan programs as
well as events.

 ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN THE CAMP


The social work trainees conducted various activites during the camp to
enrich the skills and make the villagers aware about various programs and
schemes that will benefit them:
1. Inauguration program at Sanal- Inauguration program of Rural camp-
Rupantahra was conducted by the social work trainees at Sanal. The
program was complied of recreational activities. The head of village was
present in the program, a dance was performed by one social work trainee,
song was sung by two social work trainees, awareness information about
maintaining clean environment and hygiene was given to the children and
their parents in the village during the program.
2. Household survey- The social work trainee on the guidance of CSA
workers conducted Survey in 4 villages- Sanal, Aalgur, Naagnur, Chikka
Pada Salagi at Jamkhandi. Each team was divided into groups of 5
students in which 1 kannada speaking member has to be present, due to
the language barrier. Each group in 1 day complete 4 to 5 household
survey that helped the social work trainee to build professional rapport
with the villagers, got information about the problems and challenges
faced by the villagers and also it helped in developing communication and
maintaining interpersonal skills.
3. Shramadaan- The social work trainee arranged broom and dust keeper
from the villagers due to good rapport building with them and then all the
social work trainees as a team worked together in cleaning the roads of the
village and side areas and made awareness about clean environment and
hygiene.
4. Interaction with SHG Workers- During Shramdaan and household
survey, the social work trainee interacted with the SHG workers and got
the detail idea about the problems and challenges faced by the villages at
Jamkhandi. Interaction helped the social work trainee to improve
communication skills and rapport building was done.
5. Cultural activity- The social work trainees conducted cultural activities
during the camp such as: Dandiya dance, Singing patriotic song, Solo
dance and camp fire, fun games with children of the villages. Cultural
Committee was responsible for making the schedule of programs and
events that are going to be conduct in the villages as well as camp site.

6. Street play- Street play was conducted on the Importance of Toilet, 12


members participated in the street play, the issues that were highlighted
due to open defecation in the street play were: various diseases caused,
fear of animals to women, children and men, children with fever, violence,
the environment is spoiled. The street helped the villagers to recognize the
importance of toilets.
7. Drama on child marriage- 1st Team performed the street play and the 2nd
team performed drama on child marriage and make the villagers recognize
the importance of education and negative effects of child marriage.
8. Painting Anganwadi- The social work trainee helped the team members
in painting the Anganwadi at Aalgur by drawing sketch on the main front
wall of Anganwadi and other social work trainees helped in painting the
sketch. The social work trainee helped in painting the front wall in Chikka
Pada Salagi.
9. School Activity- The social work trainee along with the team members
conducted the program in the school including cultural activities at the
schools of Sanal, Aalgur, Naagnur and Chikka Pada Salagi. Fun games
were played with the children and awareness information about clean
environment and hygiene was given to them.
10.Planting saplings- The social work trainees planted saplings in 4 villages-
Sanal, Aalgur, Naagnur and Chikka Pada Salagi at Jamkhandi that helped
the villagers realise about the importance of clean environment and trees.
For each sapling planted in the village, one person was assigned to take a
proper care of it.

 REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ASSIGNED

Discipline Committee-
The objectives carried out by the discipline committee was:
1. To maintain safety of social work trainees during stay and travel.
2. To encourage punctuality of everyone and keeping up of tasks assigned.
3. To maintain hygiene and clean environment in the camp as well as in
the community.
4. To ensure standardize behaviour during the work time.
5. To maintain proper time schedule for each task and event.
6. To ensure cleanliness of places of common usage such as kitchen,
eating area, hall, toilet.
The activities carried out by the discipline committee were:
1. A list of Do’s and Don’ts were prepared by Ragha, Shaily, Sijo and
Annie and social work trainees were given the orientation about the
same in the camp.
2. Garbage bags were brought and kept in appropriate places for proper
disposal of waste and seggregation.
3. Timely reminders were passed around and all the groups were given
prior reminder about their assigned duties and tasks for the next day
regarding cleaning and preparing breakfast.
4. One member of the committee ensures that the dress code is maintained
by every social work trainee, before leaving for different villages.
5. Constant reminders were given to ensure maintaining proper time
schedules.
Though there were challenges faced by discipline committee, every
member worked hard for maintaining the proper decorum of the camp and
successfully completed the camp with proper cooperation of each social
work trainee.
 ACHIEVEMENTS

The following were the objectives that the social work trainee achieved
during the rural camp:
1. The social work trainee got exposure to rural areas and rural lifestyle.
2. The social work trainee understand about the ground realities of
community living.
3. The social work trainee experienced group living and learnt to adjust.
4. The social work trainee analysed the approaches and strategies of
intervention used by Centre for Social Action (CSA) in the community.
5. Conducted Awareness programs in the schools and villages of the
community.
6. Organized cultural programmes for four communities at Sanal, Aalgur,
Naagnur and Chikka Pada Salagi.
7. The social work trainee learnt Team Building and gained different skills
such as: rapport building, interpersonal skills, organizational skills,
communication skills, program development, assessment and evaluation
of needs, strengths and problems of the community.

 CONCLUSION
Rural camp was the huge learning experience to the social work trainee.
Most of the objectives that were laid down for the camp were achieved.
The social work trainee learnt to work as a team and this is the most
important benefit of rural camp. The social work trainee interacted well
with the local community in all the 4 villages and adjusted in the rural
environment without any complain and problem. The trainee along with
her fellow trainees conducted awareness program on health and hygiene
and cultural program and it was observed that a large number of
community people attended the programs and children voluntarily
participated in the activities conducted and villagers clean their
surroundings, which shows that the program was highly effective. The
social work trainees were well appreciated by the CSA staff. Thus, the
rural camp helped the social work trainee in understanding the differences
between urban and rural setting. Thus, the Rural camp was very good
opportunity and beneficial for social work trainee to exercise social work
principles and skills in practical life.
