WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 1

INTRODUCTION

The Background Information

As an areas that has beautiful natural resources, Solok regency has

developed itself into a tourist destination that becomes one of the recommended

tourist resorts in West Sumatera. Among many choices of tourist destinations in

Solok, Bukik Chinangkiek is located in Solok Regency, X Koto Singkarak is the

most popular choice to be visited today. This tourist attraction was built on beautiful

hills with views of Lake Singkarak. This resort provides facilities which were

suitable for all ages, such us photo spot, resting shelter, restaurant, and paragliding,

so that everyone can enjoy that place. The resort is also provided by lodging and

waterpark.

This nature tourism is made by private company who deliberately bought

the hill to open economic opportunities in the surrounding environment. This

location was originally planned building a villa or semi-resort, but by the social

leaders and intellectuals in Nagari X Koto Singkarak did not support this plan.

Finally, a classy tourist spot was built on this place with complete facilities. Until

now Bukit Chinangkiek tourism is still under development.

The Problem and Significance

Bukit Cinangkiak Tourism is wonderful resort with a good tourism potential

since it provides complete facilities for visitors. By number of the attractions, this

place has developed to be one of tourist destination nationally. However, due to the

lack information about this resources, it is only visited by local visitors from the

same regency and from other cities in West Sumatera.

The promotion about this tourism is very limited. So far, the promotion is

carried out only by putting a number of banners on certain strategic places. Bukit

Chinangkiek tourism has not been fully exposed to the public. The fact that this

tourism provides complete facilities and beautiful views of Lake Singkarak for the

visitors can be a good reason to increase the number of visitors and economic value

for the people around the place if this place has been well promoted. Perhaps, this

will also attract tourists from abroad to visit this tourist spot.

Based on the problem above, write a brochure about Bukit Chinangkiek

tourism as final report project is the best solutions. The brochure will provide

information about tourist attractions, facilities provided, directions and all other

information that will be useful to promote this resort. That increase of visitors is

hoped to give a good impact to environment in Solok regency.

The Technical Goals

This final project has several goals. First, this final project is requirements

to achieve the Diploma Degree in English Department of State Polytechnic of

Padang. In addition, my skills and knowledge of writing will be increased by

making the brochure of "Writing Brochure to promote Bukit Chinangkiek tourism".

Second, for the next English Department’s students, it can be used as the reference

for those who will conduct the writing brochure. Last, the results of this project may

help local government and related institutions in promoting Bukit Cinangkiak

tourism.

SUMMARY

This chapter discuss about the theories that are applied to finish the project.

Previous Work

There are several projects which have been used as references in writing this

final project. First was project by Aini (2011) entitled “The Process in Making Dual

Language Brochure about Tourism in Tanah Datar”. In her final project, she made

a brochure of local tourism in dual language, the purpose of her project was to share

information about culture, tradition, and culinary. Also she hoped the visitors know

the tourism of Tanah Datar by reading the brochure.

The second project was written by Edison (2009) with the title “The process

of Translating an Article by using Google Translate”. In his final project, there are

three steps for process of translation; analyzing source text, transferring the

meaning, and reconstructing target text. The purpose of this project was to find

some errors from the result of Google translate and fixed by good process.

Furthermore, this final project was made to understand about the process of

translating.

The last final project was conducted by Mahmudah (2017), the title is

“Translating Muhammad Al-Fatih: Perang Urana comic by Handri Satria from

Bahasa Indonesia into English”. In her final project, she discussed about the

process of translating a comic. The purpose of the project was to add the collection

of Islamic comic for the readers. In making project, she used some application there

were PhotoScape 3.62, Paint 1511, and Photoshop Cs6.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 5

Based on the previous work above, this final project has some differences

and similarities. My final project discussed about writing brochure. This is same as

the final project has done by Aini (2011). The project was same with my project

that was making brochure, but the difference is in language and content. Aini’s

project was about local tourism and she used dual language, while my project is

about Natural Tourism in West Sumatera and only wrote it in English. Furthermore,

in my final project, I also used three steps process to translate the text, this is same

with the project by Edison (2009) but I did translating text manually, I did not use

Google translate. Last, on my final project, I discussed about translating a brochure,

not translating an article, while the similarity is the application that I used to making

brochure that is Adobe Photoshop Cs6.

Theoretical Background

To support the final report, several theories referred to writing brochure

were used such of definition of writing, categories of writing, the process of writing,

definition of brochure, the purpose of brochure, types of brochure and stages in

making brochure.

Definition of writing. Writing is not an easy activity because in process of

doing writing, some aspect such as creative thinking skills, grammar, spelling,

coherence, cohesion, and writing style are needed.

There are some writing definitions that are proposed by the experts.

According to Lyons (1995: 1838), writing is a form of problem solving in which

the writer faces two main tasks: a) Generating ideas in language, and b) composing

these ideas into a written structure adapted to the needs of the reader and the goals
WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 6

of writer. Furthermore, Harmer (2004) states that writing encourages students to

focus on accurate language use. This activity will provoke language development

because the students resolve problems what writing puts in students’ minds.

Based on some definitions above, it can be concluded that writing is a

productive process done through some stages. Firstly, it is the process of exploring

and transmitting ideas, thought and feeling into written form. Secondly, it involves

a number of revising process to carry out a grammatically and orderly texts. The

writing productions are in the forms of readable texts which should be meaningful.

Categories of writing. Hunnabel (2016) describe that a writer’s style is a

reflection or personality, unique voice, and way of approaching the readers. There

are four general purposes that lead someone to write a piece and their usages is

important for any writer. The categories and their definitions can be seen as follows.

Expository. Expository writing's main purpose is to explain. It is a subject

oriented writing style, in which authors focus on expressing a given topic or subject

without voicing their personal opinions. The author just tells you about a given

subject, such as how to do something. The key point usually explains something in

a process, often it is equipped with facts and figures, usually in a logical order and

sequence.

Descriptive. The main purpose of descriptive writing is to describe. It is a

style of writing that focuses on describing a character, an event, or a place in great

detail. It can be poetic when the author takes the time to be very specific in his or

her descriptions. The key point is often poetic in nature, it describes places, people,
WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 7

events, situations, or locations in a highly-detailed manner. The author visualizes

what he or she sees, hears, tastes, smells, and feels.

Persuasive. The objective of persuasive writing is to convince. Unlike

expository writing, persuasive writing contains the opinions and biases of the

author. To convince others and to agree with the author's point of view, persuasive

writing need to include justifications and reasons. It is often used in letters of

complaint, advertisements or commercials, affiliate marketing pitches, cover

letters, and newspaper opinion and editorial pieces. Persuasive writing is equipped

with reasons, arguments, and justifications. In persuasive writing, the author takes

a stand and asks you to agree with his or her point of view. It often asks the readers

to do something about the situation (this is called a call-to-action).

Narrative. Narrative writing used to tell a story. The author will create

different characters and tell it is readers what happens to them (sometimes the

author writes from the point of view of one of the characters; this is known as first

person narration). The key point is a person tells a story or event. It has certain

characters and dialogue. It also contains definite and logical beginnings, intervals,

and endings. Occasionally, it describes situations like actions, motivational events,

and conflicts with their eventual solutions.

The Process of Writing. Process of writing is really important in making

brochure. Therefore, it is necessary to know the process of writing itself. According

to Harmer (2004: 4-6), there are four main elements in writing process. Those are

planning, drafting, editing (editing and revising), and final version.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 8

Planning. Harmer (2004: 4) states that in planning process, there are three

main issues have to be thought by students. The first, the students have to decide

the purpose of writing. Next, students have to think about language styles. Finally,

students have to consider the content.

Drafting. Harmer (2004: 5) states that drafting is the first version of a piece

of writing. In this point the students should be given a lot of time, because they

need to focus on the development ideas and the organization of those ideas more

than the development of perfect grammar, punctuations or spelling.

Editing. Harmer (2004: 5) states that in editing the students read again

what they write as a draft to check their writing if there are mistakes. After the

students find the mistakes, then revise it. By doing those, the mistakes can be

minimize.

Final Version. Harmer (2004: 5-6) says that the last stage is the final

version. Accomplishedly, after all process, the students make final version. It is

possible that the final version is much different in the plan and the draft has been

made before. It happens since there are many changes in editing process. Any

unimportant information stated in the draft can be deleted.

After finishing that processes, the result of writing is ready to be sent out

to the reader. It is different if students write spontaneously. Therefore, the result

of writing will be better by following those process.

Definition of Brochure. According to Molina and Esteban (2006), a

brochure is a form of printed promotional material designed to communicate with

existing or potential tourists. In addition, there are several experts who support this
WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 9

statement, which say that the brochure is useful as a media for tourism promotion

((Yoety) (1992) and (Gitelson and Crompton) (1983)).

Yoety (1992) states that brochure is a sheet, printed with relatively good

paper, lay-out attractively arranged with all the potential to be promoted, also

Gitelson and Crompton(1983) describe brochures to be the second most frequently

used external information source following commercial guide books.

It can be concluded that the brochure is a paper that contains certain

information, which is usually applied to promote something. Brochure may

contain pictures, directions, and information which can be seen as the purpose of

the brochure.

The Purpose of Brochure. According to Art Design (2013), the purposes of

brochure are: first is to follow up after an initial sales contact. Second, to give more-

detailed information than a flyer. Third, brochures are used in direct mail campaigns

as the follow-up to a postcard that was mailed out to generate interest. Brochure as

one of promotion media is created especially to be kept and referred to again and

again. It's expected that only people that are interested in learning more about a

product will pick up a brochure.

Types of Brochure. According to Hartsook (2010, p.1) there are two types

of brochure. They are adventorial and informational brochure. Firstly, adventorial

brochure is used to attract attention and to play on the emotions of the customers.

It compels people to pick it up and read it. It has an attention getting tagline or

headline. It contains lots of white space and short bullets or points, rather than

long paragraphs. It often includes a call to action that asks the customer to make
WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 10

an order, phone call, come on down, clip a coupon, mail a reply card or some

other action that puts it and the customer in contact. Secondly, informational

brochure is used for the customer who has learned of certain company and has

requested more information. Unlike advertorial brochures, informational

brochures can be crammed with information.

In conclusion, the adventorial brochure promotes something that can attract

attention, this brochure also includes the contact number, and some other things that

can lure customers to respond. While information brochure is a type of brochure

with a purpose is to convey information in detail.

The stage of brochure. According Friedmann (2010), the process to making

a brochure begins with gathering information, thinking, analyzing, and questioning,

and it ends with devising a creative concept. This visual idea then needs to be

developed through some kind of outline or treatment and then be scripted in

a format appropriate to the medium concerned. This script format lays out a set of

descriptive instructions in a special language about what is to be seen on the screen

and heard on the sound track. It can break the scriptwriting process down into well

recognized stages.

Background Research and Investigation. Part of the process of making a

brochure often involves background research and investigation of the subject matter

before defining the objective or outline the content. Sometimes it is at the beginning

of the creative thinking process and sometimes it is in the middle. Research is

necessary to define the target audience.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 11

Location research. For film, video production or creating a brochure,

location research is very important. Abstract ideas become concrete when the stand

in a place or see the surroundings location research can make the difference for a

writer. Visual writers need visual ideas. It can get visual ideas by being in the

environment of a topic. This is important to remember when negotiating a writing

fee. It includes an allowance for travel time, research time, and related travel

expenses is important.

Brainstorming and freeing imagination. In writing brochure a creater

cannot write a script with just facts or information that includes with visual ideas.

These ideas may allude to facts or information or they may even embody that

information. Getting a script going depends in imagination.

Brainstorming usually means just writing down all ideas as they come

without constraint or formality. It means stirring up your imagination by free

association and by doodling. Making lists, drawing diagrams, and sketching images

in storyboard sequences usually does the trick. The most important element of this

process is to feel free to think or visualize whatever comes to mind. By its very

nature, this kind of writing produces need more material than usual. Therefore, it

leads to a necessary selection or editing process.

While, in this writing brochure, a creator also needs to do the translation

process. There are some steps to do translation process. According to Nababan

(1999) there are three steps in process of translation; analyzing the source text,

transferring the meaning, and reconstructing the target text.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 12

Analyzing the source text. The analyzing is done by reading text to

comprehend the meaning of the text. This comprehension requires the

understanding of linguistic and extra linguistic unsure. Linguistic unsure refers to

language unsure, the analysis is done in all of sorts of levels such as sentence,

clause, phrase and word which are in the source language text. While extra

linguistic unsure are related to socio cultural of source language.

Transferring the meaning. In this step the translator has to find the

equivalent of the source text. This process happens in mind (it refers to “proses

batin” in Bahasa Indonesia). It means that this process is in the abstract form.

Reconstructing the target text. After finding the equivalent of source text

and getting revision for revisers, the translator should do reconstruction. In this step

the Translator only gives some additional to the text after making sure that is clear.

PROCEDURE

This chapter discusses about the procedures that have been conducted in

finishing the final project “Writing Brochure to Pomote Bukik Chinangkiek

Tourism”. In the process of making this final project, it is adopted from Friedman

(2010), AArt Design (2013) and Nababan (1999) theories. The procedures are

formulating the idea, observing of location, interview, script writing, translate

script, proofreading, designing brochure and publishing. To design this final

project, it was used Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 and Adobe Illustator CC 2018 as

the application to design the brochure.

Formulating the idea

In writing a brochure, it is necessary to have a good idea so people can be

attracted. Before starting making this brochure, there were several things had to be

done. First, it was necessary to search for tourism areas or search on social media.

Secondly, I asked some friends who have visited the tourism. Third, I conducted

research, with looking for natural tourism in the local area.

Observing of Location

The first thing to do was to get all of information about Bukik Chinangkiek

tourism, and contact the manager of the resort to determine the time to make an

observation. It was needed to prepare everything before going to the location, such

as notebooks, camera, tape recorders, video recorders, and other things. After

arriving at the location, I walked around the place, and recorded anything that can

be used as material for making brochures. After recording important things, I took

a few pictures to support the results of the brochure to be designed.

Picture 1.
Process observing of location

Interview

After observing the location, the next step was interviewed manager of

Bukik Chinangkiek Tourism. The interview was needed to find out the problem with

the tourism object and add insight about something to get more information from

the interviewer. Mr. Arif and Mrs. Yuli had been interview as manager of the resort.

List of questions were needed to make the interview efficient and it focused on, the

history, the facilities and the price, safety, also, the problem, and the planning for

next year.

Picture 2.
Process of interview

Script Writing

After the interview, the next stage was made a script. Making script was

important in process of making brochures, because script was the basic ideas needed

in a production. The quality of a script determined the final results of a project. In

general, the content of brochure is a description of the message or information

submitted or all matters related to the making of a project. The last, it was useful to

avoid forgetfulness in important notes which were the main points.

Picture 3.
Writing a script process

Translate script

After writing the script in Indonesia Language, the script had to be translated

in the English Language, because the point of the project is to writing brochure in

English Language. So that, it was needed to analysis the script before translating it,

then it was transferred the script from Indonesia to English language. The analyzing

was done by reading text to comprehend the meaning of the text.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 16

Picture 4.
Translate script process

Proofreading

Proofreading is the process of reviewing the final draft of a piece of writing

to ensure consistency and accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and

formatting. That was by rereading the overall translation text. Then, I corrected the

arrangement of sentences that were difficult to understand. Last, an evaluation of

the advantages or disadvantages of the text in terms of English in writing was

conducted.

Design Brochure

Before editing a brochure, I did certain activities such as designing pictures,

writing script, and everything related to design. Then I created a plan throwing a

brochure together without a plan can result in type, images, and a layout without a

consistent tone. The plan was needed to include thinking through how to use the

brochure and who the audience will be. Whatever purpose about, the brochure

needs to be designed with a specific audience in mind so that everything, the

information, the layout, even the size and fold type that appeals to their specific

needs, and desires. Adobe illustration CC 2018 and Adobe Photoshop CC 2018

application were required to design brochure. The steps of designing brochure will

explain by picture below.

First step, creator created a new page by click a new file - select the size of the Art

board as A4 size - then click “create”

Picture 5.
New page

After appearing as shown in the picture then I made a guide / help line with show

rulers.

Picture 6.
Made guide

After that, a field for the brochure fold was made. if only A4 will get 3 folds and

what is needed is 4 folds so add one object outside the Art board, so the paper size

is more than A4, then make a guide / line as shown in the picture put each line

vertically across to help design, Art board is expanded from 3 folds to 4 folds

because it is more than A4 size

Publishing
Publishing is an important aspect that must be pay attention in

marketing product. It was necessary to ensure the written document should be

completed before giving to the publisher. However, the goals of making brochure

was to publish the brochure and reach to the readers.

WRITING BROCHURE TO PROMOTE BUKIK CHINANGKIEK TOURISM 31

DISCUSSION OF RESULT

This chapter discussed about several process that related in the process of

writing brochure of Bukik Chinangkiek Tourism in Solok regency with English

language. The theory by Friedman (2010) about writing were applied in writing this

brochure. To make the theory complete, I also used theory from AArt Design (2013)

about design brochure and theory by Nababan (1999) about translate script. The

process are formulating of idea, observing the location, interview, writing script,

Translate process, proofreading, design brochure and publishing.

Formulating Idea

The first process in writing brochure of ”Bukik Chinangkiek” was

formulating of idea. Based on Friedmann (2010) it can’t write a script with just

facts or information. It is need to write with visual ideas. These ideas may allude to

facts or information or they may even embody that information. This theory used

to make it easier in the process of finding ideas to develop ways of making

brochures. Next, to understanding the steps that must be taken and formulating of

idea is one of process that is very important and useful for adding information about

how to make the brochure itself.

Observing the location

The second process is observing of location. According to Friedmann

(2010) is experience tells that when needed to get information. Sometimes it is at

the beginning of the creative thinking process. Sometimes it is in the middle.

Research could be necessary to define the target audience. The theory apply because

to find out information about tourism object that will be observed through not only

in social media or internet. It can make an observation guidance according to the

scope of the tourist object that will be observed. After that, determine the data is

needed the implementation of observations. Next, determine the observations that

will be made to collect data, so that the observation is smoothly.

Interviews

The third process is interview. Friedmann (2010) defines that another source

of information. Sometimes its need the point of view of the man in the street or need

to interview someone who represents a certain class of people. From this theory,

the point is to understand that interviews are very important in the process of

making writing, especially for collet the information. Because everyone has a

different way on see something, depends on their life experiences. Before the

interview, it have to prepare all questions that are easy to understand and to the

point, during the interview, ask questions according to the list and after the

interview is finished, check the information obtained, is there information that has

not been collected or not.

Script Writing

The fourth process is script writing. Friedman (2010) states the script

writing is a process. It begins with gathering information, thinking, analyzing, and

questioning it ends with devising a creative concept. These theory applied to write

the script. First collect information about the project, then analyzing the information

and questioning the information collected, made concept, and finally write it into

soft document form in Bahasa Indonesia.

Translate script

The fifth process is Translate script. Nababan (1999) states that there are

three steps in process of translation; analyzing the source text, transferring the

meaning, and reconstructing the target text. After write the script in Bahasa

Indonesia, it have to translate it to English language because the point of project is

to writing brochure in English language. So that, to translate the script it have to

analysis the script, transfer the script from Bahasa Indonesia to English language.

Last step is reconstructing the final script.

Proofreading

The sixth process is proofreading, Friedmann (2010) mentions that revision

is the hardest part of a writer’s job because it means being self-critical. It means

throwing out ideas or changing them after it have invested time and energy to make

them work. Sometimes it have to give up ideas that believed. Based on the theory

above, Proofreading is the process of re-reading, to check the incorrect structural

and grammar. So that, the person doing proofreading must understand the structure

of writing and grammar. For this project, the proofreading was did by alumni of

English Department who works as a translator on Antara news. Furthermore, the

advisor also did proofreading for script.

Designing Brochure

Brochure is one of the marketing tools that every business always uses.

Brochures have the flexibility to replace expensive advertising media. AArt Design

(2013) states that a brochure is generally a standard-size sheet of paper that has been

folded lengthwise two times to create four panels (bi-fold) or folded three times to

create six panels (tri-fold), this theory used to make a design brochure in project

because the theory accordance with the process to make a brochure. For editing

brochures, there are several applications that can be used, such as Publisher and

Photoshop. But in this project, it chose Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator

application.

Publisher

Publishing is the last stage to submit the brochure design to the publisher.

Make sure the written document should be completed before giving to the publisher.

However, the purpose of writing brochure is to publish their it and reach to the

readers.

CONCLUSION

After finishing all the process of the final project, there are some conclusions

that can be taken during writing brochure of Bukik Chinangkiek tourism. First,

make a brochure is one effective way in promoting tourism. It is able to provide

interesting and clear information to viewers. This is also make the audience easy to

find out about Bukik Chinangkiek tourism.

Second, after following all stages of making brochure, I realized that this is not

an easy thing. Because, the process of making brochure need careful preparation.

Such as in visiting the tourist attractions for several times and making an

appointment with the manager. During the process of making brochure, I learn

many things such as good communication, it is really help me to get information

while interviews. Also good writing skill, so that I can write brochure draft in good

words and make reader understand what I want to inform through the brochure.

Finally, by making this final project, I can apply my writing skill to improve

my knowledge in writing field. In making the brochure there are several tools that

can be used, such us Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, and

Microsoft Office. But for making this brochure I used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe

Illustrator. After all, because of this final project, I can get experience that are

helpful to improve my skill in writing.

RECOMMENDATION

There are several recommendations that I purpose to English Department

State Polytechnic of Padang, especially English Department’s students who are

interested about writing and Bukik Chinangkiek Tourism. First for English

Department students, it will be good for them to make new product related to the

process of writing within the brochure. It is because this process of writing brochure

can add their experience in writing text well by following reliable method and

procedure of writing. Also I hoped my final project will be useful as a reference for

writing subject.

Second for English Department I expect to give more theories and methods

in the writing process, because this is the first year of writing a brochure for the

final project, I having a little trouble finding references to the theory that related to

my project, but if students have been given provisions in class about theoretical

references that can be used in writing, then it will be easier for them to do writing

in the future. Besides that, give more exercises and practices for the students in

writing will help students to write better.

The last for Bukik Chinangkiek tourism, the brochure can help to increase

the promotion of this tourism, but the most important point is how and where this

brochure is published. It is hoped that Bukik Chinangkiek tourism will help to

publish brochures. Not only through brochure, but this tourism also expected to

make video feature and active on social media about the tourism. So that, foreign

tourist can find information easily besides using brochure.
