PERFORMANCE TASK: Situational Analysis

The Language Area will be attending a symposium addressing certain ethical dilemmas faced by
researchers on November 27, 2019. In this activity, a group of researchers will be sharing solutions to certain
problems encountered when conducting researches. You have been chosen as one of the class
representative to share your solutions to certain ethical problems. You will be given a chance to write and
present your answers that will hone your decision-making skills. Your output will be checked and
evaluated by a group of spectators from different research organizations.

Directions: Below are some ethical dilemmas faced by researchers. Answer the questions after each situation
to solve the problem. You may use proofs or evidences to support your claims. (Source:

1. You conduct a phenomenological study of teenage students from a public school system. You conduct an
in-depth interview with a teenager to whom you have promised confidentiality. She started to tell you about
her stepfather was getting too friendly with her and had touched her in those “special places”. She tells you
she is depressed and plans to commit suicide. You believe she means it. Can you break your promise? If
so, who do you tell?

3. You conduct an ethnographic study of a young adult over a long period. Your fieldwork takes you to his/her
home, his/her school, the bars he/she frequents, his/her church, and so on. Over time, you become very
attached to him/her. You find your friendship leads to feelings toward him/her that you cannot control. You
know that getting to close is inappropriate, but you find it difficult to control your feelings. What should you
do?

4. Your plan is to study educational practice among a particular tribe of the Philippines. You approach the
leader of the school on the reservation. He gives his permission to study students and teachers. However,
when you attempt to get the participation of these groups, no one is willing to sign your permission form.
They are willing to talk to you, but they do not trust what you might do with the form. Even though you
assure them that you will keep the information private, they see you as someone who represents the
leadership and thus are mistrustful. What should you do? How do you convince them that need to sign the
form for you to continue?
