INTRODUCTION

A. Research Background
One of the language skills that we learn in English learners is speaking. We
use speaking skill to communicate with other especially in classroom.
Speaking is considered as a necessary skill, because it’s essential role in
facilitating learners to master English. It enables students to express
themselves creatively, imaginatively and to communicate with other
effectively. In classroom, speaking is skill that should be mastered. In
mastering speaking, the best way to master is speaking as much as possible.
For students, speaking is not an easy task to learn. Sometimes students face
some problems in classroom. The problems may be caused by shyness or
personality factors. And another factor that makes speaking does not run well
is the difficulties in pronunciation, stress, intonation or overall rhythm.
According to Sadtono in Hanunah, language learning has two problems, they
are linguistic problems and non-linguistic problems. Linguistic problems are
problems related to language. They are pronunciation, grammar and
vocabulary. While, non-linguistics problems are problems of non-language
such as the student, the teacher, method, material, facilities, and motivation.
From linguistic problems that is faced by student is limited understanding
of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary whereas the students need to
master it and they can speak English well. Non-linguistic problems that caused
the students can not speak well are the student itself because every students
have their own ability in learning speaking. Beside that, the teacher also has
important role to create the classroom enjoyable. In the classroom, students’
motivation is important because it makes the students confidence to speak in
front of classroom. The method that is used in the classroom is also important
because if it is not match with the students learning process will not run well.
Teacher should have good material that help the students in learning speaking.
To support the learning process, students also have many facilities to help
them to reach the goal of learning process.
The teacher taught in classroom mostly using English and sometimes used
Bahasa when the students do not understand the teacher explanation. The
teacher asks them to speak English. When they interact with the teacher in the
classroom the students should speak English although they do not speak very
well. Sometimes the students feel afraid to speak English in front of the class
because they are afraid if their pronunciation is wrong. They also feel shy with
their friends when they speak English. Sometimes students cannot understand
what the teacher said. So, the interaction in the classroom is not going well.
However, students should be able to speak fluently and master the classroom
language.
B. Research Problem
Based on the background of the research above, the researcher formulate
the problem as follows:
1. What are the strategies in overcoming speaking problems of linguistic
used by the 11th students of SMA Bina Utama Pontianak?
2. What are the strategies in overcoming speaking problem of non linguistic
used by the students of SMA Bina Utama Pontianak?
C. Reseach Purpose
Based on the statement of problem above, the purposes of the research aim
to describe::
1. The strategies in overcoming speaking problems of linguistic used by the
students of SMA Bina Utama Pontianak.
2. The strategies in overcoming speaking problems of non linguistic used
by the students of SMA Bina Utama Pontianak.
D. Significant of The Research
The findings of this research are expected to give useful information and
also positive contribution. Even not only for the students, the are some
contribution of this research.
1. For the Teacher
Hopefully, this research can give a good impact for teaching and
learning English, especially for the teachers reflection to make good
strategies for the students and in order to know how to create a good
interaction in the classroom between teachers and students.
2. For the Students
Hopefully for the students, they will aware for the best strategies that
appropriate with them to master the material, make a good interaction
and conversation in classroom.
3. For the Others Researcher
The writer hopes thi research can be useful resource and help the
other researcher to enrich the theories by information from this research,
and attract the other researcher to implement the same title in the future
to find out the same problems in different area in the world so it will be
useful too for the teacher and students in that area.
E. Scope of Reseach
Scope of research is the essential guideline to define explicity the scope of
the study. In this research there are two aspects in the research, they are
variable and terminology.
1. Research Variable
There are two kinds of variables, first is independent variable, and the
second is dependent variable. Independent variable is the atecedent while
the dependent variable is the consequent. But here the writer is using a
descriptive study, so here all the variables are dependent variables
because they are studied in relation to all the other variables that exsist in
setting where the research taking place.
In descriptive study, there are no independent of dependent variable.
Descriptive study only describe the current state of a variable. In this
research focus on students’ strategies in overcoming speaking problems
of linguistic and non-linguistic.
2. Research terminology
In this research the writer will analyze the term are students’
strategies in overcoming speaking problem to solve their own problem in
speaking in the classroom. Speaking is use by human being for making a
communication one and another. Speakers use communication when they
are going to inform someone about something. Speakers apply language
according to their own goals. So speakers should be both listeners and
speakers at the same time for the effective communication.
F. Research Methodology
1. Research Form
In this research, the researcher uses a descriptive qualitative
research. In this study means describing what are the students strategies
in overcoming speaking probems. The result of this research is in
descrptive data with written form. By doing this descriptive research, it is
expected that the problems of speaking will be found regarding to
linguistics and non lingustic problems in student’s speaking. The
population of this research is the 11th Students of SMA Bina Utama
Pontianak. Then distributing questionnaire toward the samples of the
research. The questionnaire is closed-ended questionnaire. After
collecting the data, the researcher continues to analyze the data by using
certain method.
2. Research Objective
The object of this research is 11th students of SMA Bina Utama
Pontianak as the sample.
G. Technique of Data Analysis
The technique of the data analysis is use Miles and Huberman (1994: 12)
developed a model of data analysis that assists the researcher by providing a
visual reference as to how data can be tackled. In four step: (1) data
collection; (2) data display; (3) data reduction; (4) conclusion
drawing/verification.The data that already gathering will be analyze. Here the
writer as the researcher will using descriptive research to excpeting the
problems of speking will be found.
PREVIOUS RESEARCH

There are some previous study that the writer find about students’ problems in
speaking performance. For the first is Christina Lhaksmita Anandari, who has
done a research about Indonesia EFL students’ axienty in speech production, and
the result that axienty was the evident that foreign language axienty appeared
among the student and that self-reflection activities helped the students to realize
their strengths, weaknesses and helped them to do problem solving in order to
enhance their public speaking performance and increase their confidence. Self
reflections, for these students, supported their effort toexperience a meaningful
learning in speaking class. Self-reflection enabled the students to have a good
comprehension of themselves as individuals. The researcher could also conclude
that based on the self-reflections, the students were able to increase their
confidence. They could have a concrete evidence of their achievements which
they did not realize beforehand.
