Honors 100, AI
Assignment #3

Section 1: Interview Summary

Elise is clearly very passionate about public health. She shared about how in high school,
she was a member of HOSA, which is a pre-doctor student organization. She went to Nationals
with her school’s team. She was also a volunteer lab assistant at the Texas Tech Health Center,
on a project they were doing about tuberculosis. Her primary concern is global public health --
she said that because people move around so much more than they have before, there is an
increased risk of new epidemics. She enjoys listening to music and playing her guitar in her
spare time. I learned she has very diverse interests; she’s done martial arts since she was three,
but she’s always wanted to get involved in musical theatre. She enjoys traveling and wishes she
had better time management skills.

Section 2: Your Suggestions for your Partner

1. Timmy Global Health x University of Washington

a. Timmy Global Health is an international NGO that provides health care assistance
in Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. The UW wants to start a
chapter and is looking for board and club members! I think it would be really cool
for Elise to be a student board member for an organization like this.
b. I found the activity from the Honors email that gets sent out every few weeks.

ity-of-washington/

c. I see this fitting with what Elise is passionate about because Timmy Global Health works
to empower students and volunteers to fight pressing global health challenges --
something that Elise was clearly very passionate about. If she was a Board member for
the organization here at UW, she could participate in international medical aid teams and
help others become educated about global health issues. This activity could count as
service, leadership, or international engagement, depending on how much time you want
to put into it.
2. Volunteering as a Patient Escort for UW Medical Center
a. These volunteers help transport, welcome, and support visitors and patients to UW
Medical Center. They work directly with resource teams and transport staff. Volunteers
learn a lot of new, valuable skills as well, such as safe wheelchair handling, customer
service, and the opportunity to work with patients in a hospital environment.
b. Found in the recommended opportunities but thought it really fit with what Elise might
like!
i. https://www.uwmedicine.org/volunteering
c. While this is more localized than what I think Elise wants to do, I do think that it’s a
wonderful opportunity to understand what a hospital is like. I also think that it grows on
what she’s already done, and so she would be able to gain more from the experience. It
feels like a good launching point for a lot of new opportunities in the future, and is
something that would look good on applications. She is a very cheerful person, and I also
just think that her personality would be a good match for what the UW Medical Center is
looking for in volunteers.
3. Husky Acoustic Club
a. I don’t know as much about this club but it seems like it might be something really fun! It
would be a leadership experience because you would be teaching other kids how to play
acoustic instruments. If you enjoyed it enough, you could try to become a permanent
member and move into a leadership position as well!
b. I found this on the RSO page.
i. https://huskylink.washington.edu/organization/acoustic
ii. https://www.facebook.com/groups/HuskyAcoustics/
c. This would allow a space that Elise could play guitar with other people who also like
playing music, and I wanted to offer at least one thing that wasn’t public health based
because it's important to have a balance between your academics and other things that
you are passionate about.

Section 3: Self Reflection

As I was researching, I didn’t find many opportunities I would be interested in, as I was
focusing on public health issues. However, I already have a pretty clear understanding of my
values and passions, and have ideas for what I am going to do for my experiential learning. I did
find one or two study abroad programs I found interesting.

I might be interested in pursuing volunteer opportunities outside of the University of

Washington. While I didn’t find anything for my partner when I was doing research on external
NGOs, I did find a couple that I would be interested in, especially pertaining to International
Human Rights and other international organizations.
