Classroom Management Philosophy

Classroom management skills are very important for student engagement, and having an

orderly classroom where students know expectations and procedures. This skill helps to ensure

the effectiveness of teachers. Students become more secure and comfortable in their classroom

when they have developed routines with known expectations through the strong classroom

management skills of their teacher. Teachers are able to have classrooms full of students who

know how to stay actively engaged and demonstrate appropriate behaviors through learned

expectations.

Student engagement plays a huge role in classroom management. When students are

actively engaged then they are staying focused on the task at hand. Engaged students are

actively contributing to classroom discussions or activities. The engaged student demonstrates

positive behaviors and is a role model for other students. When students are actively engaged,

they are not talking out of turn, distracting others, or modeling undesired classroom behaviors.

Engaged students are students who are actively participating and learning the concepts being

taught.

In my future classroom, I plan to start establishing procedures, routines, and behavior

expectations from the first day the students enter into the classroom. It is important that students

know right away what is expected of them and what is acceptable classroom behaviors. I do not

see myself as being a “strict teacher”, but I will let my students know my expectations of them.

We will do this together, not by creating classroom rules, but by creating classroom goals. For

example, a classroom goal of student safety could mean that we use walking feet instead of

running. However, creating goals instead of rules has a more positive lookout since we are

focusing on how to stay safe instead of what we can not do. Establishing procedures, routines,

and behavior expectations early will help students to become more comfortable in the classroom.
Some students will even feel safe just knowing that we do certain things at certain times because

they may only have structure at school. When my students are safe, comfortable, and engaged

they are active learners building relationships with others.

The classroom management strategies utilized in my future classroom will meet the

diverse needs of all students. I will have the same expectations for all students. Implementing a

variety of strategies will ensure that students needs are being met. When the classroom is

effectively managed then I will be able to achieve my instructional goals of students grasping

content. I will be able to effectively teach lessons instead of having to constantly address

unwanted behaviors since all students know the expected behaviors. Parents will also be

involved through apps like ClassDojo or even a classroom color calendar to inform them of their

child’s day at school.

My style of classroom management will help to create a safe, engaging, learning

environment for all of my future students. Once in my classroom, I will be able to put my

classroom management strategies into practice to really see which ones will work best for me

and my students. This will be a learning process that could change from year to year as I build

new relationships with new students.
