Study the Teacher Roles in Module 2-The Teacher

(Section 2.2.). Consider these 3 roles:  Assessor,
Controller, Manager.
Write a paragraph on each of these 3 roles, describing, in
your own words:
- Why you think this role is important within the classroom
setting.
- What might happen if the teacher is not proficient in the
role?
Paragraph length: 75 words maximum per role.
The total length of assessment answer: 150-200 words.

Assessor

It’s important that the teacher’s up-to-date in where the

students are currently at with their knowledge. The teacher
needs to be able to recognise and correct errors.
If the teacher isn’t proficient in this role, this can cause the
students to have remaining errors in their language skills.
They’ll be confused why something they’ve thought to be
correct isn’t acceptable anymore - because they were
never thoroughly corrected or helped with implementing
the accurate language skills.

Controller

This role is vital to keep the classroom behaviour

balanced. The teacher has to make sure, that when it
comes to group activities or individual ones, the whole
class pays attention and everybody understands the task.
If the teacher lacks this role, students can become very
confused and distracted quickly, potentially distracting
other students as well hence disrupt the smooth flow and
group work of the classroom.

Manager

The role of a manager in a classroom setting is the follow-

up role of the controller. In this case, the teacher has to
m a n a g e t h e c o n t i n u o u s fl o w o f e a c h s t u d e n t
understanding what happens during the class at all times.
Clear instructions are required for this. If this role is
missing during class, students will be misbehaving (if it’s
children) and the material the teacher has planned won’t
be successfully taught.

Study Module 4 Range of Techniques to Present and

Reinforce the Meaning of Lexical Items (Section 2.6).
Wherever possible, you should give an active
presentation of a vocabulary item that the students do not
know, instead of them using a dictionary. This will ensure
that students have a better chance of being more
motivated to learn and will increase the chances of them
remembering the word.
There is a list of 3 vocabulary items below. Your students
are intermediate and above. They do not know these
words, but they may know synonyms or antonyms of
these words. How would you best convey the meaning
and teach the vocabulary items to them? Write a
paragraph on each word/words including types of
interactive questions which can help accomplish this task.
You do not need to restrict your method of conveying
meaning to the suggestions in Section 2.6. There are
other ways it could be done. Be imaginative!
- Aircraft carrier
- Yesterday
- Love
Paragraph length for part 2 of 4: variable      Total length
of assessment answer: 200-300 words

Aircraft carrier

I would start out by saying the words ‘a large boat on the

water with a flat surface’. Ideally, I would have some
pictures to also use as a visual tool.
Questions I would ask:

Do you know what a landing deck is?
Do you know how aircrafts can lend on water safely?
Have you ever seen a military air base on water, maybe in
a movie?
An aircraft carrier is what allows smaller aircrafts such as
helicopters to land on water to be fixed for example.

Yesterday

Do you know the word today? That is the present, right?

What about tomorrow? We use that for the future,
correct?
Now, yesterday is in the past. For example, today is
Monday and tomorrow will be Tuesday, so yesterday
was… Sunday.
If today is Wednesday, what day was yesterday? - Here,
students hopefully will understand the concept and say
‘Tuesday’.
Love

So Tommy, what is your favorite type of animal?

Tommy will say: ‘horse’.
Thank you Tommy. Now, what is an animal that you do
NOT like or you’re scared of even?
Tommy will say: ‘spider’.
Ok Tommy. So when you feel like that towards an animal,
we could say you hate it, right? We don’t like the spider,
we hate the spider in fact, we are scared of the spider.
But what if Lara likes spiders and spiders are her favorite
type of animals? We would say that Lara LOVES the
spider. She thinks of spiders as her friends, as creatures
she enjoys watching. So we can say, she loves spiders.
When we like and enjoy something or someone, we use
the word ‘love’. When we don’t like or enjoy something/
someone or in fact, we are terrified, we use the opposite
of love, ‘hate’.

Part 3 of 4
According to the videos seen in Modules 8, please write a
short paragraph answering the following questions:
What are some examples of on-the-spot feedback?
What are some examples of delayed feedback?
Paragraph length per question for part 3 of 4: 50-75
words.
The total length of part 3 of 4 submission: 100-150 words

On-the-spot feedback:

Teacher can use gestures and silent mouthing. She has to

offer a quick correction. If the student seems discouraged,
teacher should emphasise it’s ok to make mistakes, we
are here to learn.
Teacher encourages students to speak in a sentence, not
just in a word. Asking for clarification is also necessary.
Teacher also motivates students to answer correctly by
reformulating her question in a different way or by
repeating the most important word of the question.

Delayed feedback

These techniques avoid interruptions. It focuses on

allowing students to speak or write with fluency and
cohesion. The observer notes errors and give feedback
after (individual, group or whole class). This feedback can
be oral or written.
Teachers can record or videotape students and give
feedback. Students can self-reflect, get feedback from
their peers or the teacher.

Part 4 of 4
Study Module 10, particularly any information relating to
test construction.
Multiple choice questions construction may seem easy but
it’s not.
Design 4 multiple choice questions based on the test
information below. Ensure there is a valid question (stem)
and 4 valid options (choices). Also, ensure that the
distractors (wrong answers) are sufficiently close to the
correct response as to be worthy of consideration by the
candidate, i.e. make the options realistic. Do not use ‘All
of the above’ or ‘None of the above’ as an option.  Make
sure to indicate the correct answer according to your
options.    Try and vary the stem construction, i.e. do not
construct all of the questions in the same format, such as:
‘Which is the synonym closest in meaning to  happy?’,
‘Which is the past participle of the verb go?’
Test Information
1.     Design a question testing any antonym
2.     Design a question testing the stressed syllable in the
word photography
3.     Design a question testing any set of minimal pairs
4.     Design a question testing the Present Perfect tense
There is no word limit for the part 4 of 4. However, any
question + choices that exceed 40 words or so is likely to
be too lengthy.

1. What is the antonym of the word ‘hate’?

a. Dislike
b. Love
c. Despise
d. cry

The correct answer is b - love. Dislike and despise are

synonyms and cry is only similar as an emotion we could
attach to it, but it’s neither a synonym nor an antonym.

2. ‘Photography’ has 4 syllables. Which syllable do we

stress?
a. The first
b. The second
c. The third
d. The fourth

Correct answer is b.

3. I ____ the house I ____ in every morning.

a. leave, live
b. live, leave
c. leaf, live
d. leave, leaf

Correct answer is ‘a’.

4. He is hungry. He _____ yet.

a. Didn’t eat
b. Haven’t ate
c. Hasn’t eaten
d. Hasn’t ate

The correct answer is ‘c’.
