Digital Assignment- Heat Transfer

1 A truncated cone has top and bottom diameters of 22 cm respectively and a height of
12 cm. calculate the shape factor between the top surface and side (conical surface).
Also the shape factor between the side and itself. The fraction of radiation leaving the
top surface which is intercepted by the bottom surface is 0.15.
2 Calculate the following for an industrial furnace in the form of a black body and
emitting radiation at 2300oC. i) Monochromatic emissive power at 1.2 µm ii)
wavelength at which the emission is maximum, iii) maximum emissive power, iv) total
emissive power, and v) total emissive power of the furnace if is assumed as a real
surface with emissivity equal to 0.8.
3 Determine the reduction in radiant transfer between two large parallel planes at 1000
K and 600 K when a shield surface with emissivity of 0.2 and 0.6 on either side is
placed between them. The emissivity of the surface are 0.7 and 0.8 respectively. What
will be the shield temperature?
4 Determine the shape factor between the surfaces 1 to 4 and 4 to1. Also determine the
heat flow if ε1 = 0.4 and ε4 = 0.6 and T1 = 1000 K and T4 = 500 K.

5 Two circular disks of 1 m diameter are placed coaxially, parallel and symmetrically at
a distance of 1 m. The disks have an emissivity of 0.6 and are at 1200 K and 500 K.
Determine the reduction in radiant heat flow due to the introduction of a shield of equal
diameter midway between the two. The shield has an emissivity of 0.1 on both sides.
Also determine the temperature of the shield. Neglect interactions to the outside space.

6 Determine the shape factor from the base of a cylinder to the curved surface as shown
in Figure. Also find the shape factor from curved surface to base and the curved surface
to itself.

8 Hot water at 2.5 kg/s and 100oC enters a counterflow heat exchanger having total area
of 23 m2. Cold water enters the exchanger at 5 kg/s and 20oC. The overall heat transfer
coefficient is 1000 W/m2K. Determine the total heat transfer rate and the outlet
temperature of hot and cold fluids.
9 Consider two large plates; one at 1000𝐾 with emissivity 0.8, and another at 350𝐾
having emissivity 0.6. A radiation shield is placed between them. The shield has
emissivity as, 0.1 on the side facing hot plate, 0.3 on the side facing cold plate.
Calculate the percentage reduction in radiation heat transfer as a result of radiation
shield.
