CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Lack of sleep also known as insufficient sleep or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having
enough of sleep. Sleep has a major role in daily cycles and reconstruction of physical and mental
abilities. It helps us repair and restore our organ systems including muscles, immune systems and
various other hormones. And it is helping us to retain what we learn at work or school for later use.

The loss of sleep is a common problem among students. It alters normal functioning of
attention and disrupts the ability to focus on environment sensory input and can be linked to a poor
school performances. It also have a physiological effect on us. It can cause irritability, reduced
tendency to think positively, cause of bad moods and a decreased of willingness to solve problems.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Edilberto a professor from Department of Psychology of College of Science if a

person suffers from lack of sleep on a regular basis, they may start to experience mania. Symptoms
include psychosis, paranoia, extremely high energy levels, hallucinations, aggression and more.
Links have been found between insomnia and mental illness. Unfortunately poor sleep can also
cause mental illness.

In the study, the researchers found that sleep depreviation makes it difficult for brain cells
to communicate effectively, which, in turn, can lead to temporary mental lapses that affect memory
and visual perception. In other words the findings offer clues as to why a sleepless night makes it so
hard to think and concentrate the next day. (Samantha Leigh Ocampo)

Findings suggest that a lack of sleep can interfere with the ability of neurons in the brain to
encode information and translate visual input into conscious thought. Select regions of the brains
were dozing, causing mental lapses, while rest of the brain was awake and running as usual.
(Juvilyn V. Caber, March 27, 2017)

Too little sleep causes the loss of concentration, and can lead to memory impairment and
compromised physical performances. Chronic sleep depreviation can also cause mood swings and
hallucinations, according to Marian De Jesus (October 12, 2014).

Sleep is important for every adult but for students in particular, the importance is
heightened. “For students trying to learn, it becomes an important subject and unfortunately more
and more students are sleep deprived now than in the past.” To be able to retain all the information
that they learn in school and apply it to their career after graduation, it is imperative that students
practice effective sleep patterns. (Mikee Rodriguez)

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Xue Ming, Rebecca Koransky and George C. Wagner, a survey on sleep
schedule. Night awakening and prolonged sleep onset were common and associated with poor
school performance. The total number of poor sleep factors in an individual also correlated with
poor school performance. Traffic accidents, performance errors, and exacerbation of disease states
have all been linked to poor sleep quality. In general, adolescents prefer to retire and rise late,
especially when their melatonis release is delayed during puberty.

More bad news for those of us who struggle to get enough sleep at night. Among the
findings: two consecutive nights of less than six hours could leave you sluggish for the following six
days. Staying up an extra hour, even if followed by a full night sleep, is correlated with lower
performance the next day. But going to bed an hour earlier than normal has a negligible effect.
Results showed that over the first 24 hours, having one insufficient night of sleep is associated with
1.2% slower performance on average keystroke timing. Two insufficient nights of sleep are 4.8%
slower compared to two with longer than six hours of sleep, according to Tracie White.

It is perfectly normal to worry about the effects of a lack of sleep. In fact, the findings of the
great British Sleep Survey tell us that 68% of poor sleepers surveyed were bothered by thoughts
about how they would cope the next day. It stands to reason that these worries may not be
completely unfounded and years of research on good sleepers has shown that, although the effects
of sleep deprivation vary by person, we are all affected following a night of insufficient or poor
sleep. Just some of the areas in which you may be affected are mood and emotional processing, pain
thresholds and functioning of the immune system. However, the good news is that the effects of lack
of sleep may not be as bad as one would expect. How refreshed you feel in the morning will depend
both on the continuity and architecture of sleep. We know that the first few hours of sleep are the
most beneficial, in terms of physical restoration, which is why one will sometimes wake up after 3
hours of sleep and feel well rested.

Yusuf Patrick, Alice Lee, and James Moss, sleep deprivation is common among university
students, and has been associated with poor academic performance and physical dysfunction.
However, current literature has a narrows focus in regard to domains tested, this study aimed to
investigate the effects of night of sleep deprivation on cognitive and physical performance in
students. Participants were randomized into two conditions: normal sleep or one night sleep or one
Mount Carmel School of Maria Aurora, Inc.
Maria Aurora 3202, Aurora
night sleep deprivation. The reasons for poor sleep hygiene include alcohol and caffeine intake,
stimulants, and technology, which prevent students achieving sufficient sleep time and quality. A
cross-sectional survey found that 71% of students did not achieve the recommended 8h of sleep,
with, 60% classified as poor sleepers.

Sharuna Segaren, for decades, the dreaded all-nighter has been viewed as a fundamental
pillar of a college student experience. Visit any college campus library during exam season and
you’ll most likely find students prepped to stay up all night glued to their books. At least one library
or study hall stays open on campus 24/7, accommodating scores of students who stay up all night
to cram in revision for upcoming exams. Most students probably know that depriving themselves
from sleep is bad, but nonetheless they’re willing to sacrifice sleep and as a consequence, health,
telling themselves it’s just for a short time and they can soon start sleeping 12 hours a day once the
semester draws to a close. But research shows that sleep is extremely important, not just during
finals week but throughout the entire semester.
