MYP Year 5 Sciences

Chemistry

This course is the first introductory chemistry class that students will take at Le Jardin Academy.
Much of our learning this year will be student-driven; full and enthusiastic participation is a must for
all students! This course is very much hands-on, and the expectation is that all students will become
proficient in laboratory procedures, and will conduct experiments in a safe fashion. Formative
assessment tools consist of homework, quizzes, and classwork. Most quizzes will be announced, but
expect periodic pop quizzes, tests are always announced at least 1 week in advance.

The major topics of study will be matter and change, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical
bonding, chemical reactions, solutions states of matter, and energy. Each unit will be studied from
one of the five contexts (Areas of Interaction) described in the Middle Years Programme (MYP)
curriculum of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and assessed using one or more of the six
MYP science criteria. Each unit will also be introduced and guided by an open-ended question that
students will provide a response to by the end of the unit.
