Does The Competition Can Give Negative Impact for The Children Mental?

Do you often hear about competition? Competition is a situation in which someone is

trying to win something or be more successful than someone else (Cambridge Dictionary).
Competition usually occurs at home, at school, at company, etc. For example, twenty of students
compete to get the first winner in the speech competition. The students will compete to get that
posisition with they acted as if they are most deserved that position. Unfortunately without
realizing that competition can give negative impact for children. The negative impact is creating
stress for children, and teach children to be selfish and do not care for others.

Competition can use as a motivational tool for children to be creative, confidence and
achievement. And the competition is an opportunity to measure the ability of children. But in
fact, we often know that competition can make children depressed. For example, when a child
participates in a competition many ambitious parents want their child to win the competition.
Because of this, the mental of the children becomes depressed and unconfident. Especially if the
children does not win the competition and does not get trophy, parents blame their children both
directly and indirectly. So it can cause the children will feel depressed and unconfident when
they follow the other competition.

Every competition always creates the winner and the loser, so parents must convince their
children that what the results of the competition will not change their love for children. And give
motivation their children who lose that they can be the winner for the next competition. It is very
fatal if the parents are angry with the children who is losing the competition. But unfortunately,
there are some parents are angry with the children who losing the competition. The defeat itself
is already a blow for children. Should be at the time children need confirmation and acceptance
of their defeat from their parents. There are also parents who protest to the committee or the
judges when their children lose. Whatever the reason, the impact is that the children do not learn
to accept the result of their effort. With the parent attitude can teach children to be selfish and do
not care others. The children can be imitating the attitude of his parents like that to do various
ways to be the winner of the competition without caring the others.

In conclusion, seeing the negative impact of competition as describe above the parents
must be wise in choosing the competition that their children will follow. The parent must
consider that the competition can damage or spur a child’s creativity. And the parent must not
force their children to always be winner. The parent should be always give motivation to their
children even if their children lose the competition. It is important that the parents be the
motivator of their children to increase their confidence and creativity.
