FOREWORD
According to Salman Rushdie “The only people who see the whole picture, are the
ones who step out of frame.”. Since we are now in the new world full of innovations,
we can now see the essence of Education Before. Have you still remembered the
classroom setting before? Our teacher has always been very busy in teaching us
different learning areas and do all the talking the whole day. The discussion was
detailed and clear because the teacher was then the source of information. Our
teacher had direct contact with us especially when we have doubts about the topic we
discussed. All we did was just to sit and listen till the whole session ends.
SYNTHESIS
Traditional learning starts from the idea of total control of the teacher over
students in the way a curricular content is taught (Novak, 2003: 128; Lulat, 2005: 179).
In other words, the teacher conceives their students as "empty holes" in knowledge
and only through their teachings the “holes” can be "filled". In a traditional school,
students are measured according to their individual achievement and are encouraged
to master skills such as working independently, sitting quietly while listening to a
teacher and taking turns talking. It focuses on student achievement, and typically
provides some standardized measure of achievement. Report cards, grades and
promotion from one grade to the next are hallmarks of a traditional education .
Learning begins with the teacher sharing his knowledge with students, proceeds with
discussions between the teacher and the students and ends with the new information
written in notebooks.
Different types of Education have always its drawbacks. Since teacher is the
source of information, all students are dependent on their teachers in every study
related matter. Such dependence suppresses students’ creativity so that many of them
never get to know their strengths. Traditional education is cost demanding. Tuition fees
are usually very high. In addition, all the textbooks and other school things are quite
expensive. Some parents face difficulties spending money on all the things that school
requires.
