Course Rationale:
Project management is the overall planning, control and coordination of a project, from
inception to completion, aimed at meeting a client's requirements in order that the project will
be completed on time, within the authorized cost and to the required quality standards. This
course serves as an introduction to project management. It offers an overview of the
framework, processes and key knowledge areas of project management. The course is
structured to provide basic understanding and skills in managing engineering projects based
on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) developed by Project
Management Institute. To successfully understand the overall concepts involved in project
management, the tasks and assignments provided in this unit are to be seen as
opportunities to engage in your ways of thinking
Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to provide the key concepts and foundation knowledge in project
management, and to describe, clarify, and formalize project management so that you can
apply new knowledge and skills in your professional endeavors
Prerequisite:
Advance Standing
Course Objectives:
On completion of this course, you should be able:
1. Demonstrate the understanding of the framework and process/life cycle of project
management as a discipline, from initiation to completion, including planning,
monitoring, control and termination
2. Apply all key functional areas, including project organization structure, within a
project context, indicating the interconnection and integration of all the functions
critical to achieve project success.
3. Recognize the strategic importance of projects and particularly the role of the project
manager
4. Develop a project management plan
Course Content:
This course covers the following topics:
Project life-cycle;
Project stakeholder analysis & management strategy
Feasibility study, PM processes (initiating, planning, controlling, executing, closing);
Ten PM functional areas (integration, scope, time, cost, quality, HR, communication,
risk, procurement and stakeholder), and their integration
The strategic importance of project, the role of project manager, project organization
structure; and,
Introduction to Project Governance
Class/Laboratory Schedule:
two (2) lectures per week @ 75 minutes
no laboratory activities
Course Assessments:
Your performance in this course will be measured from the following assessments:
Individual Assignment 10%
Group Assignment 30% (developing project management plan;
include individual component)
Quizzes 20%
Comprehensive final Exam 35%
