LESSON
Multiplying Polynomials
6-2
Success for English Learners

Problem 1
Multiply 3 x 2 ( x 3 + 4).

3x 2 ⋅ x 3 + 3x 2 ⋅ 4
The Distributive Property says that
a(b + c) = a i b + a i c.

3 x 5 + 12 x 2
When I multiply, I add exponents.

Problem 2
Expand ( y − 3)(2y 2 − 5 y + 6).

( y − 3)(2y 2 − 5 y + 6) = y (2y 2 − 5 y + 6) − 3(2y 2 − 5 y + 6)

= 2y 3 − 5 y 2 + 6 y − 6 y 2 + 15 y − 18
= 2y 3 − 11y 2 + 21y − 18

1. How would you explain the Distributive Property using arrows? How
would this help you solve Problem 1?
