14:45 – 15:30 Powertalk: Improving Human Performance and Safety

Brief: Although it's fairly straightforward, there are two ways to

improve performance. The first, and most familiar, is to improve
performance through instruction, coaching and feedback, and lots
of practice. The second is to reduce unforced errors. People will
still make performance errors even after they know how to do
something well. Over 95 percent of these errors are caused by four
human factors or states: rushing, frustration, fatigue and
complacency. If you're not moving, they can cause quality problems
or reliability errors, production problems or efficiency errors and
problems with customer relations (inside and outside).

However, if you're moving, or things are moving around you, then

these four human factors can cause you to move into the path of
the hazardous energy or to slip, trip, fall or skid. These two critical
errors: line-of-fire and balance, traction or grip are involved in over
95 percent of all acute injuries.

In this session, participants will learn the four human factors that
cause the majority of performance errors and injury causing errors.
In addition, they will learn four critical error reduction techniques
and the neuroscience behind them and learn how to use these
same techniques to help enhance their performance, which will
improve quality, production and safety.

16.30 – 17.15 Panel Discussion: Leading the Way Towards Zero Injury at Workplaces

Discussion points:
 While a lot of the safety culture can be influenced by the upper
management or direct supervisors, it is the individual workers
who truly forge the way in whether or not safety is embraced
and implemented every single day.
 It is estimated that over 80% of all people injured on the job
are at least partly responsible for the incident occurring in the
first place. Because of this fact, we as individuals have the
power to prevent the overwhelming majority of workplace
injuries.
 Most workplace injuries are caused by unsafe decisions and
unsafe actions of individuals. If the majority of a work crew
believes the possibility of zero injuries exists and takes action
on this belief then it is truly possible to go long periods of
time with no injuries.
 Focus on one task at a time; do not focus on the amount of
effort it will take to avoid injuries over a long period of time.
What is important is the task you are about to do once you
leave this meeting.

 Work-related ill health is a problem for every section of

society. The direct costs include the pain and suffering of
the injury or illness, the loss of income, the possible loss
of a job, health-care costs. It is estimated that the indirect
costs of an accident or illness can be four to ten times
greater than the direct
 Different types of occupational disease include: respiratory
diseases e.g. asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease; skin diseases; asbestos-related disease; cancers;
noise induced hearing damage; Hand-arm vibration
syndrome; musculoskeletal disease; stress; Priority areas
include, respiratory diseases (including asthma, COPD and
silicosis); and Occupational cancer (from all routes of
exposure).
 A competent industrial hygienist can help develop a
robust, practical and cost-effective exposure control
strategy, taking into account the human elements of the
work activity. Overall, they can play an integral role in
reducing the numbers of people dying, or developing life-
changing conditions, as a result of unnecessary exposures
at work.
 Skills development, hazard recognition, a comprehensive
training programme can help workers to recognize early
signs/symptoms of any potential occupational disease
